Baseball’s Charlie Borchard Commits to Stanford

Brophy senior Charlie Borchard has committed to play baseball and attend school at Stanford University, following in the footsteps of both his parents, who were student-athletes on The Farm.

“It's always been my dream to go to Stanford, and I'm excited and grateful to have the opportunity to go there,” said Borchard. “There are a lot of amazing people there, and people my dad has played with and been coached by. I am excited to be able to play baseball there with those people”.

Borchard will play for David Esquer. The 2027 season will be Esquer’s 10th in charge of the program, having guided Stanford to the 2018, 2022 and 2023 Pac-12 Conference championships, the inaugural 2022 Pac-12 Conference Tournament championship, five NCAA Regional appearances, four NCAA Super Regional appearances, and three consecutive College World Series appearances in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

“I like their philosophy and the way that they teach the game,” said Borchard of the Stanford coaching staff. “It is similar to what we do here, and it works well for how I play. I want to keep the same play style cultivated here.”

Borchard hit .367 as a junior, ranking third on the team, with 20 RBI, while going 5-2 on the mound to tie for the team lead in wins and lead the team in ERA (2.16). He had nine multi-hit games.

“I'm excited about the people there,” said Borchard. “I got to meet all the players and all the coaches, and I'm really excited to play with them. I'm excited because I'll have more time to dedicate to baseball and personal development, and I'm excited to put in the work consistently.”

Borchard’s favorite memory was scoring the winning run on Ian Palumbo’s walk sacrifice fly last season.

“I was at third, and the ball was pretty shallow, and Coach Garcia was in my ear while we were waiting for the ball to land. He was like, "Let’s test it. I'm like, " Let's do this." It was a pretty cool moment right there.”

Borchard is excited about his development and preparation for the upcoming season.

“I have gotten better at knowing the game and what to do in certain situations, especially when I don't have my best stuff or can't get a big hit in a situation,” said Borchard. “I can still contribute by executing and playing the game the right way.”

“Charlie is one of the brightest student-athletes I've had the opportunity to coach,” said Head Coach Josh Garcia ‘07. “A varsity contributor since his sophomore year, he has made an impact on our program both on the mound and at the plate. What stands out most about Charlie is how seriously he approaches everything he does, whether it's academics or baseball. His attention to detail, work ethic, focus, and commitment to being a great teammate have allowed him to excel in both areas. Charlie has an incredibly bright future, not only in baseball but well beyond it, and I have no doubt those qualities will serve him well at Stanford.

In his free time, Borchard plays the drums and likes to read. He is excited to continue the family legacy at Stanford.

His father, Joe Borchard, was a two-sport standout for the Cardinal. A switch-hitting right fielder and a three-time All-American who led Stanford to the 1999 and 2000 College World Series, he was selected 12th overall in the 2000 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox and later played in the majors for the White Sox, Seattle Mariners, and Florida Marlins. His mom, Erin, was a highly accomplished collegiate diver for the Cardinal and went on to compete at elite levels nationally, including participating in the U.S. Olympic Diving Team Trials.

Borchard will participate in the Brophy College Commitment ceremony on Nov. 11.
