Matthew Might ’99 to Be Featured in Diocese’s Night of Hope Nov. 5

Brophy alumnus Dr. Matthew Might ’99 will be among the Catholic school graduates featured in the Diocese of Phoenix’s Night of Hope on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. The virtual event will celebrate the lasting impact of Catholic education and support students and schools across the diocese.

Brophy parents, alumni, grandparents and friends are invited to register and join the program online.

A graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas and Brophy, Might has devoted his expertise in computer science to helping families facing rare diseases. His work took a deeply personal direction after his son, Bertrand, became the first person diagnosed with NGLY1 deficiency in 2012. With no established treatment or patient community, Might began connecting families with researchers and accelerating the search for treatments.

Today, he directs the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, applying genomics and artificial intelligence to rare medical challenges. Brophy recognized him with the St. Francis Xavier Award for Ignatian Identity in 2022, honoring a life’s work that reflects the call to be Men for Others.

Night of Hope will feature Might alongside alumni from Catholic schools throughout the diocese, sharing how their education continues to shape their lives and service to others. For the Brophy community, the evening offers an opportunity to celebrate a fellow Bronco while supporting the broader mission of Catholic education.

The event supports the Catholic School Support 365 Fund, which helps families afford Catholic education during financial hardship. Contributions also support classroom needs and school facilities, as well as the teachers and staff who serve students each day.

Community participation matters, too. The school with the highest percentage of registrations will receive a $5,000 tuition assistance grant. Registration is intended for adults, and Brophy families and friends are encouraged to take part.
