Basketball Improves to 3-0, Travels to California for Father Barry

Senior Luke Rehl scored a career-high 20 points in a 69-60 victory over Sandra Day O’Connor. The win completed a three-game homestand to start the season at 3-0. It was the first loss for O’Connor (6-1).

Braeden Speed led a 21-point first quarter with 10 of his game-high 21 points as the Broncos led by five points and had a 34-30 advantage at the break. Rehl led the third-quarter push with 14 of his 20 as Brophy extended its lead to 10 points 54-44.

Brophy sealed the by making five of six free throws in the fourth. Junior Ryan Burbach contributed 10 points and sophomore Rocket Schwertley added eight in the win.

Brophy travels on Thursday to compete in the 49th Annual Father Barry Classic in Sacramento, Calif.  The tournament gathers eight private, parochial schools together yearly to compete in bracket play.  Brophy has participated in the Fr. Barry in five decades, and we have won the tournament three times (1981, 2017, and 2021).  This year, five of the eight teams will be Jesuit schools including Strake Jesuit (Houston, Texas), Loyola High (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Bellarmine (San Jose, Calif.).  The other three teams will be Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.), perennial Northern California contender Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), and St. Mary’s (Stockton, Calif.) which is the only other team besides Jesuit to have competed in the Fr. Barry Classic each year since it began in 1974.

The games will be available on live stream on YouTube via NorCal SportsTV. Brophy opens against Bellarmine (San Jose, CA) on Thursday, December 7th at 8 p.m. (( p.m. in Arizona).
