Golf Wins Brophy Rodeo Behind Medalist Tyler Spielman

The Brophy College Prep golf team overcame a six-shot deficit late in the second round to win the Brophy Rodeo National High School Golf Invitational presented by PING for the second consecutive season at Grayhawk Golf Club. Senior Tyler Spielman provided the highlight moment on the final shot of the tournament, draining a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th to take medalist honors.

“Tyler is the anchor and he takes the pressure off,” said Head Coach Jon Shores. “The course played tough and the golf staff put the pins in some tough spots. We played pretty steady golf and looked like Hamilton was going to walk away with it. But the leaderboard changes over five minutes. It came down to the guys making big putts and Tyler making a big putt on 18 to seal the win for us.”

Spielman, the No. 1-ranked player in the PGA National High School rankings as a junior and the reigning Arizona State champion, was the first-round leader after a six-under-par 66. He was being chased by playing partners Corner Canyon’s Bowen Mauss and Hamilton’s Vincent Cervantes. Mauss had the low round on the day with a 68, including an 18th-hole birdie that tied him with Spielman briefly for the lead. Spielman answered with his birdie for a 71 that included five birdies.

Brophy won the team title by two strokes over Hamilton 591-593. Tucson’s Ironwood Ridge was third at 595 and Corner Canyon (Utah) was fourth at 600. Trinity Christian had the low team round of the day at 292 to move into fourth.

“It is a step for Tyler for what he has done for the program and himself individually,” said Shores. “He is building on the successes he has had and growing the confidence he has had. I was really happy for our team especially the younger guys that got to play. They played well today considering the pressure. For the team aspect, this was great to get their feet wet and perform. I am really proud of the team.”

Senior Henry Dall finished tied for 11th after a one-over par 73 in the second round. Freshman Asher Nelson was tied for 26th after rounds of 77-76 and junior Dylan Boenning was 31st overall shooting 75-80. Freshman Nathan Ash provided the fourth scorer in the final round with a 78 for a two-day total of 161 to tie for 56th. He provided a key birdie on his final hole that closed out a back nine 36.

Coronado won the girl’s title for the second consecutive season at 564, a 30-stroke victory over Xavier.

Coronado’s Ali Mulhall had a one-stroke over teammate Brynn Kort for Medalist honors.

The team plays Chandler on Tuesday at Oakwood Country Club at 3 p.m.
