Senior Golfer Tyler Spielman Looks for a Strong Finish

Senior Tyler Spielman finished off his junior season in the 2023-23 school year as the No. 1 ranked high school golfer in the nation. It was a well-earned honor after he won the AIA Division I title and was named the Arizona Golfer of the Year by the Arizona Republic.

“I am going to go out there and try to play better and work on some things,” said Spielman, who has committed to play at Auburn University. “It is a new team and I am excited to play with these guys. Hopefully, we can win state again.”

Spielman had a big season in 2022. He was named the Premier Region Player of the Year after leading Brophy to the AIA Division I State Championship and winning individual medalist honors. He shot a state championship record 10-under par 60 in the first round and closed with a seven-under-par 63 to win. He is the fifth student-athlete from Brophy to win the individual state championship and the first since Ben Hayes in 1999.

“I was pretty happy with last year,” said Spielman. “It was the best golf I have ever played in that stretch. But to do it for for than individual honor and playing for Brophy meant a lot to me. It was pretty cool.”

One title he did not win in 2022 was the Brophy Rodeo where he finished second overall and led his team to the title. He tied for the low round on the day in round 2 with a five-under-par 67 to finish second overall.

“We want to go out there and win it again with a new team,” said Spielman.

Brophy Rodeo individual champion Cooper Jones of Lone Peak returns with junior teammate Kihei Akina (No. 7 and 5 in the national rankings). Lone Peak was the No. 1 team in the PGA National High School Golf Association rankings while Brophy finished fifth.

Brophy opens play at 7 a.m. on the first hole of the Talon course at Grayhawk.
