IMMERSION TRIPS

The Office of Faith and Justice conducts several trips throughout the year, each delivering a unique experience for the student participants. We offer two different types of experiences and have categorized them as “Immersion Trips” and “Advocacy Trips”.

Immersion trips allow students the experience of being completely immersed in a culture and a reality that is very different from one we know.  They will be confronted with injustice and come to know the individuals, families and communities that are directly affected.  The aim of our immersion experiences is not to build houses or to serve, but rather enter into a relationship of solidarity that leads to a deeper awareness and understanding of injustice and the true meaning of discipleship.

Kino Border Initiative -KBI

Location: Nogales, AZ and Nogales, México
*Passports Required
Dates: 1st Friday of Every Month, plus November 23rd.
Language requirement: None
Open to: Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
Approximate Cost: $15.00
Issues Examined: Immigration, U.S./Mexico Border Issues.

Ignatian Solidarity Network Advocacy Trip and Ignatian Family Teach-in

Location: Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., USA
Dates: November 9-14, 2011
Language requirement: None
Open to: Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
Approximate Cost: $650
Issues Examined: Ignatian Roots and Justice, Legislative Advocacy

Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH)

Location: Chimaltenango, San Andres, Guatemala
*Passports Required
Dates: Wednesday Jan. 11, 2011 to Monday Jan. 16, 2011
Language requirement: Some Spanish
Open to: Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
Approximate Cost: $800.00 to $1,000, depending on airfare
Issues Examined: Experience the life of Pequeños. Social/Political/Economic/Religious justice issues specific to Guatemala

SSP/JJP Credit: This immersion experience counts for ½ of the 50 hour JJP requirement or ½ of the 40 hour SSP requirement.

Walk for Life

Location: San Francisco, CA
Dates: January 20-22, 2012

Marine Sustainability Trip

Alabama Civil Rights Immersion for Service and Solidarity

Location: Alabama, USA – Birmingham, Montgomery, Selma, Tuskegee, Reform, and other communities of the so-called “Black Belt” of Alabama.
Dates: April 9 – 14, 2012 (Easter Break)

Guelph, Canada

Location: Ignatius Jesuit Centre in Guelph, Canada

Issues Examined: Climate change, sustainability, Jesuit eco-spirituality

Appalachia Immersion Trip

Location: Anderson, West Virginia
Dates: May 27 – June 3rd
Language requirement: None
Open to: Juniors, Seniors
Approximate Cost: $950
Issues Examined: poverty, gas extraction and environment, mountain top coal removal and environment

SSP/JJP Credit: ½ of 50 hour JJP requirement

El Salvador

Location: Various cities and villages in El Salvador

Dates: May-June 2011, trip will last approximately 12 days
Language requirement: None
Open to: Juniors ONLY
Approximate Cost: $1900.00 + $250.00 Summer School tuition for course
Issues Examined: Poverty, immigration, war, Church as herald for justice
Note: Students chosen for this immersion also must enroll in and successfully complete the Senior Religious Studies elective course “Church in the Modern World.”

Argentina Immersion and Exchange Program

Location: Phoenix, Arizona and Santa Fe, Argentina

Dates: end of January/beginning of February (2/3-2/5 mandatory retreat) and May 30, 2011 to June 28, 2011
Language requirement: At least two years of Spanish at Brophy.
Open to: Sophomores, Juniors
Approximate Cost: $4,500.00
Includes: 1 World Language credit (Spanish) ½ Fine Arts credit (Humanities)
Issues Examined: Teen life in Latin America, issues of poverty and educational access

Peru

Location: Various cities in Peru

Dates: June 2012, trip will last between 21 and 23 days
Language requirement: None
Open to: Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors
Approximate Cost: $2,500
Issues Examined: Global poverty, immigration, climate change, fair trade and more.

SSP/JJP Credit: ½ of the 50 hour JJP requirement
Note: Students chosen for this immersion also must enroll in and successfully complet the Religious Studies elective course, “Church in the Modern World”.

Puebla Trip

Location: Puebla, Mexico (about 2-hours south of Mexico City)

Dates: July 1st – 10th (tentatively)
Language requirement: None (though 2 years of Spanish is recommended)
Open to: all Sophomores
Approximate Cost: $1100
Issues Examined: Immigration, sustainability, free trade

SSP/JJP Credit: half of the 50 hour JJP requirement

Me-to-We Africa

Location: Kenya, Africa
*Passports Required
Dates: Summer 2012, trip will last approximately 2 weeks
Language requirement: None
Open to: Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
Approximate Cost: $5500
This trip does not qualify for Brophy financial aid and is coordinated through the Me-To-We organization.
Issues Examined: Global poverty, sustainability, other issues specific to Africa

SSP/JJP Credit: This immersion experience counts for ½ of the 50 hour JJP requirement or ½ of the 40 hour SSP requirement.

Phoenix Immersion – TBA
Phoenix Immersion: Spring or summer 2011; open to all students; less than $100 total cost; Immigration, homelessness, poverty, and other issues unique to Phoenix.

(You only need to fill out the application once for all trips for which you want to be considered.  Just be sure to check the box next to each trip in which you are interested.  Please do not fill out the form multiple times.)

Financial Aid is available for most immersion and advocacy experiences.  Students must receive financial aid through Brophy to qualify for immersion and advocacy trip aid.

All immersion trip participants will be chosen through an application process and will be expected to participate in several group meetings prior to and upon return from the trip.
