IMMERSION EXPERIENCES
The Office of Faith and Justice conducts several immersion experiences throughout the year, each delivering a unique experience for the student participants.
Immersion experiences allow students the opportunity to be completely immersed in a culture and a reality that is very different from their own. They will be confronted with injustice and come to know the individuals, families and communities that are directly affected. The aim of our immersion experiences is not to build houses or to serve, but rather to enter into a relationship of solidarity. This relationship then leads to a deeper awareness of injustice and a more profound understanding of the meaning of discipleship.
Immersion experiences are grouped according to the time of year during which the experience takes place; either “Fall”, “Winter”, “Spring”, or “Summer.” Each grouping has it’s own application due date. All due dates are listed below and can be found in the Brophy calendar. It is very important for students to pay close attention to application due dates as late submissions will not be reviewed.
Kino Border Initiative day and weekend immersion experiences are offered throughout the year and applications are accepted on an on-going basis.
Additionally, Brophy offers international immersion and exchange experiences that require a commitment on the part of students and families both in February and June. Due to the increased and lengthier commitment for participants in these experiences they are grouped separately as “International Immersion and Exchange Experiences”.
TO APPLY
Students must submit the ONLINE APPLICATION. (Students must be logged into their school account before clicking the link) The application can only be accessed by students with a valid Brophy login and password. Parents are not able to access the application. Within five days of the published application due date the Office of Faith and Justice will contact each student applicant via email to confirm his interest in the seasonal experiences for which he has applied. The student will be asked to respond via email with answers to interest questions that will be used in the application review process.
*Students are responsible for checking and reading emails from the OFJ during the application process. If a student fails to read or respond to emails from the OFJ, his application will not be considered for review.
Applications will be reviewed by faculty and staff, adult immersion leaders and the Dean of Students. Within three weeks of the application due date all applicants will be notified of their immersion “placement”. If a student is not placed on an immersion experience for which he applied, he may be placed on an alternate immersion experience or placed on a waiting list. At the time of placement notification, applicants will be asked to discuss their placement with their parents and to return an immersion commitment form to the Office of Faith and Justice. This form must be signed by both the student and parent. Immersion Leaders will then be in contact with students regarding expectations, itinerary, and the payment and meeting schedules.
Kim Baldwin, Assistant Principal for Ministry, oversees the application process. If students and/or parents have questions or concerns about the application or selection process please contact Kim Baldwin at kbaldwin@brophyprep.org or x.6544.
