Lucy Hawking Visits Brophy's Loyola Academy

Lucy Hawking, writer, scientist, and daughter of physicist Stephen Hawking, visited Loyola Academy recently. Ms. Hawking, who has co-authored a series of children's books with her father that are based on science and space travel, talked to the students about space exploration, as well as climate change and taking care of our planet.

Ms. Hawking showed the students photos of earth as it looks from space, and talked about what it's like to be an astronaut. She also talked about the importance of remembering our common humanity and citizenship of this planet, no matter our country of origin.

Students had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Hawking personally, and to receive a signed copy of her latest book, George and the Unbreakable Code. She took the time to ask each young man if he thought he would like to travel to space someday. Several students asked Ms. Hawking to take a happy birthday message to her father, who despite an almost-lifelong struggle with a physical disability, will celebrate his 75th birthday in January.

Ms. Hawking was in town to participate in the annual Authors' Luncheon sponsored by the Arizona Women's Board. Boardmembers Lisa Ghelfi, a Brophy alum mom, and Genny Matteucci, Brophy Community Foundation President, arranged for the visit. Pauline Davies of ASU also helped to coordinate the event.
