Brophy Hosts Annual Loyola Academy Signing Day

On May 12, eight members of the Class of 2023 celebrated their impending graduation by announcing future plans. The students, or "Scholars," as Loyola Academy students are known, have been at Brophy for seven years, starting as Loyola Academy sixth graders. Perhaps this group, out of all the Loyola Academy graduating classes so far, faced the biggest obstacles, as the beginning of their high school experience was quickly followed by a worldwide pandemic. It is well known that the pandemic disproportionately impacted those families whose lives were already fragile due to challenging economic circumstances. Yet these students and their families persevered and all eight young men will go on to become first-generation college students.

Congratulations to seniors Erik Alvarado Gomez, Vicente Alvarado Lopez, Sergio Arvizu-Rivera, Rodrigo Carvajal, Luis Gastelum Contreras, Martin Herrera, Jesus Ruiz Suarez and Cesar Yanez Ruiz. The graduates thanked their teachers, coaches, Loyola Academy donors, and most of all, their parents and Loyola Academy director Kendra Krause.

It was noted at the ceremony that all of the Scholars have taken Honors and AP classes while at Brophy and they are graduating with an average GPA of 3.8. They have been active in sports, theater and many other areas of student life. At the recent Awards Ceremony that recognized some of the most accomplished seniors, Cesar Yanez Ruiz was honored with the Gwendolyn Reese "Spirit of Challenge" Award, Sergio Arvizu-Rivera received the Jesuit Schools Network Award and Jesus Ruiz Suarez received the World Languages/Heritage Speaker Award.

Additionally, Rodrigo Carvajal received an athletic scholarship to Swarthmore College where he will swim, and Luis Gastelum Contreras received an athletic scholarship to Adams State University where he will play football.

As the ceremony came to an end, Principal Bob Ryan announced that Ken Kendrick, a longtime Loyola Academy supporter and managing general partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, would once again be gifting each graduate with a MacBook computer for college.

Brophy thanks everyone who has supported Loyola Academy which was established in 2011 to serve middle school boys in challenging economic circumstances who showed academic promise. Through Loyola Academy, Brophy provides a tuition-free middle school experience that prepares students for the rigorous academics of Brophy's college preparatory curriculum.
