Soccer Advances to AIA 6A State Semifinals

The Brophy College Prep soccer team advanced to the AIA 6A State Semifinals with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Hamilton on Saturday. The third-seeded Broncos will play No. 2 San Luis on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on a neutral field at Buckeye Union High School.

“It is not surprising with this group of seniors that they were ready to perform at the highest level,” said Head Coach Marc Kelly. “It is one game after the next for us in the playoffs. Hamilton is always difficult to play. I am very pleased.”

Senior Matthew White opened up the scoring for Brophy (17-1-2) with s goal off a rebounded shot by Mason Snailum. It was his 18th goal of the season.

“We are going great and are feeling really good,” said White. ‘It is hard to beat a team that good twice in a season but we did it.”

Brophy took the lead into the half before adding a second goal by Tomini Oke in the 50th minute.

“It came off a corner and Pete hit it,” recalled Oke. “I was watching him and it went right to me. I hit it as hard as I could. We are pretty excited.”

Goalie Zoran Vignjevic kept the Huskies out of the goal for over 59 minutes, making 11 saves including several multi-shot possessions. Hamilton finally scored with under a minute to play but Brophy closed out the victory.

“He made 5 or 6 world-class saves including several doubles saves that kept in the game throughout the first half,” said Kelly.

Brophy, the second-ranked team by MaxPreps in the state, has won nine straight games since a loss to Mesa on Jan. 10. San Luis enters the game at 15-0 on the season. The winner advances to the state championship on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Dobson High School against the winner between No. 1 Tucson and No. 5 Perry.
