Football’s Layton Duncan to Sign with CSU-Pueblo

Brophy senior Layton Duncan has made a commitment to Colorado State University-Pueblo to play football and attend the Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference school.

“I am most excited about the family atmosphere of the program,” said Duncan. “I am looking forward to building relationships with my new coaches and teammates.”

Duncan will play for Head Coach Philip Vigil and wide receivers coach Josh Atkinson.

“It means a lot to be to have the opportunity to play college football,” said Duncan. “I just needed the opportunity to showcase what I can do. I know I can play at the next level and I think it is just the starting point to where I want to be at.”

Duncan, who has participated in the Black Student Union while on campus, had his senior season cut short by injury after four games.

“It was definitely disappointing but it was not anything I could not overcome,” said Duncan. “I had to go back to the drawing board and talk over with my family about what I wanted to do. Football is what I want to do. Now I have the opportunity and I am pretty excited.”

He recorded 13 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown in the 2022 season in his four games. He was named to the 6A Northeast Valley All-Region honorable mention team for the second consecutive season. He finished his three-year varsity career with 40 catches and five touchdowns.

“Layton came in and had a goal of playing college football and he is going to accomplish that goal and play at powerhouse Colorado State Pueblo... and I could not be more proud,” said Head Coach Jason Jewell. “Perseverance is a phrase that comes to mind when I think about Layton. From switching from quarterback to wide receiver and battling through injuries, Layton has fought through it all and will live out his childhood dream. This is why I love this sport of football, think of all of the life lessons Layton has learned. This is going to set him up for success in life. When things get hard, everyone will know that Layton Duncan will not quit, he is going to buckle down and work even harder.”

Duncan served as a team captain for his senior season.

“In his time at Brophy, Layton transformed from an aspiring quarterback into one of the best wide receivers in the state of Arizona and I know that he is going to light the RMAC on fire,” said Jewell.

Located in Pueblo, Colo., outside Colorado Springs, CSU Pueblo was 8-4 last season and lost in the NCAA Division II playoffs in the first round. They have won a Division II national championship as recently as 2014 while capturing seven conference titles and made seven NCAA playoff appearances since 2007.

Duncan will be recognized at Brophy’s Signing Day Celebration on Wednesday in the Robson Gymnasium at 7:15 a.m. The event will be live-streamed on the Brophy YouTube Livestream page.
