Soccer Defeats Top-Ranked Perry in 2OT 3-1

The Brophy soccer team defeated top-ranked Perry 3-1 in two overtimes on Thursday. Senior Julian Dubash recorded an equalizing goal in the second half and the Broncos got two penalty kick goals in overtime by seniors Mathew White and Mason Snailum to record the victory.

“It was a hard-fought win,” said captain Ian Hagan. "We did not have our best first half but we battled back in the second and gave our all in overtime.”

Brophy (14-1-2) won its sixth consecutive game to remain undefeated (3-0) in region play. The teams both entered the contest ranked nationally by MaxPreps with the Broncos at No. 19, while the Pumas were at No. 17 and the top-ranked team in the AIA rankings.

Perry (13-2-3) scored first in the ninth minute of the first half and controlled the first half of the game. But after the break, the Broncos came out with new energy and had several early offensive chances. Dubash connected with a blast assisted by White from 30 yards out that found the left corner to tie the game at 1.

Both teams battled throughout the rest of the half but remained tied into the double overtime format. Brophy took the lead after Snailum was tackled by the Perry goalie, setting up a penalty kick by White one minute into the extra period. Snailum and White paired again in the second OT period with White drawing a PK that Snailum connected on for his seventh goal.

“It is a huge win and I might even say our biggest win of the season,” said White, who scored his 17th goal. “We are heading into the playoffs and seedings by beating the No. 1 team in the state. We were able to show the state who we are and what we are about.”

Brophy will host Chandler on Thursday, Feb. at for Senior Night at 7 p.m. in their final regular season game.
