Brophy/Xavier Speech and Debate Team Continues to Excel

Brophy and Xavier College Preparatory compete together as the Brophy/Xavier Speech and Debate team, and students from both schools have met with much success this year. Most recently, team members represented at the Harvard Westlake Debates in Los Angeles and also in the Scorpion Spectacular at Mountain Ridge High School.

At the Harvard Westlake Debates which included approximately 40 teams from around the country, Timothy Jiang '25 advanced to the top debate rounds. At the Scorpion Spectacular which included 650 competitors from around the Valley, 11 Brophy and Xavier students advanced to top rounds across debate events.

Competitors Maryam Al Qaderi, Campbell Brown, Lauren Carpita, Hesed Coctecon-Cruz '24, Elise Kindle, Ryleigh Mangundayao, Henry Ponce '25, Evan Rivera, Hope Smith, Mahima Sanghera and Michael Tsai '25 advanced to top rounds. Elise Kindle was runner-up in Original Oratory as well as a finalist in Informative Speaking; Hope Smith was runner-up in Prose/Poetry Interpretation as well as a finalist in Dramatic Interpretation; Maryam Al Qaderi was a finalist in Original Oratory; Lauren Carpita was a finalist in Congressional Debate; Ryleigh Mangundayao was a finalist in Program Oral Interpretation; Henry Ponce was a finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking; and Evan Rivera was a finalist in Dramatic Interpretation.
