Swimming & Diving Finishes Third at State Meet 

MESA – The Brophy College Preparatory swimming and diving team finished third at the AIA Division I State Championship meet on Saturday at the Skyline Aquatic Center.  

“Today the boys stepped up with best times across the board,” said Head Coach Daren Brubaker. “I am really proud of them.”
 

The Broncos were well represented in the finals led by two top-three finishes by Georgetown commit Gabe Gonda, who placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (49.87) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (51.03).
 

“We had a lot of great swims by our seniors,” said Brubaker.
 

Senior Finnegan Crawford earned a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.58) and the 100-yard butterfly (50:57).
 

Brubaker noted two great relay legs by Rodrigo Carvajal in leading off the 200-yard free relay and closing the medley relay.
 

All three Bronco relays swam in the A finals and recorded two fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay
(Gonda, Theodore Neilson, Finnegan Crawford, Carvajal) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (Carvajal, F. Crawford, Oprandy, Gonda). The 400-free relay (Oprandy, Crawford, Heffern, Herrera) closed the meet with a sixth-place finish. 

Sophomore Oprandy was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.15) with teammate Theodore Neilson in fifth in 58.20 to score points for the Broncos.
 

Oprandy took the 200-yard individual medley consolation final in 1:56.95 among four swimmers in the heat with Neilson (10
th), Nicolas Wood (12th) and Mark Heffern (13th).
