Brophy Receives Community Partner Award from Saving Amy

Saving Amy, a local nonprofit that works with families transitioning from homelessness, held its sixth annual Saving Amy Celebration on Oct. 22, at the Heard Museum, and recognized Brophy with the Community Partner of the Year award for Brophy's work with Saving Amy's Kids Go program. Brophy students act as big brothers to younger students in the Kids Go program, helping them with their homework, taking them on outings, and encouraging them to work hard and do well in school.

Brophy senior Peter Calihan, who spoke about his experience as a tutor and mentor, noted that after he reassured a student that it was cool to make good grades, the younger boy's grades went from average to straight A's. Saving Amy's executive director, Ms. Jennifer Kiernan, presented the award and remarked, "Brophy students are the heart of our Kids Go program. They tutor and mentor our SA children and the relationships they establish are life-changing. I am beyond grateful for everything that Brophy does for Saving Amy."

Mr. Bruce Deline, who runs Brophy's Office of Faith and Justice Ignatian Encounter program that tracks students' volunteer efforts, said, "The kids at Saving Amy frequently go from being D and F students to being A and B students. Just knowing someone cares and wants them to succeed is transformational for them." He added, "And the mentorships solicit a lot of growth and maturity from our own students."

Brophy students also volunteered the evening of the event which honored Saving Amy's graduating families, covering the live and silent auction, checking people in and out and selling raffle tickets.
