3rd Annual Capital City Tip-off Classic Returns to Brophy Prep for an exciting doubleheader

CHANDLER, Ariz. (October 20, 2022) - Monarch Sports Arizona is pleased to announce the return of the Capital City Tip-off Classic to  Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. The third annual edition will feature two boys’ varsity basketball games on Friday, December 2:

  • 6 p.m. Aurora (CO) Regis Jesuit vs. Phoenix St. Mary’s Catholic
  • 7:30 p.m. Goodyear Millennium vs. Phoenix Brophy Prep
The event will feature three highly-successful boys’ varsity programs in Arizona in addition to hosting, for the first time, an out-of-state team.

In game one, St. Mary’s Catholic – coming off a 19-8 season – has one of the most dynamic players in Arizona in 6’2” 2024 Styles Phipps. The  Knights, who were a 4A Final Four participant last season, are led by Head Coach Damin Lopez. The Knights played 10 out-of-state schools last  year traveling to Georgia, Louisiana, and California. Regis Jesuit finished 15-8 last year, played in the Sweet 16, and return their leading scorer  in Tarea Fulcher (5’11” 2023), who averaged 15 ppg. last season. Head Coach Ken Shaw is in his 49th year as a basketball coach and has won 5  state championships.

Game two will feature the Tigers and Broncos in what is shaping up to be a terrific early-season matchup. Millennium and HC Ty Amundsen are  looking forward to the season with 6’6” 2025 Kingston Tosi and 6’6” 2026 Cameron Holmes as major contributors. Amundsen has been to six  state championship games winning three titles. Brophy – with Matt Hooten at the helm – is a state championship contender in the 6A  Conference after a Final Four appearance last season (25-3 record). Look for 6’6” 2023 (NAU commit) Arman Madi and Braeden Speed  (6’4” 2024) to make noise on both ends of the floor.

“As the Head Coach of Brophy Prep boys’ varsity basketball, I’m excited our program, for the second consecutive year, is partnering with  Monarch Sports to host the Capital City Tip-off Classic. We’re excited to have Robson Gymnasium as the site of two competitive games as the  high school basketball season begins. – Matt Hooten, Brophy Prep Boys’ Varsity Basketball Head Coach
