Football Comeback Falls Short Against Highland

The Brophy College Preparatory football team’s comeback fell a yard short as Highland held on to a 13-8 victory Friday at Central High School.

“I am extremely proud of our team,” said Head Coach Jason Jewell. “No one in the state gave us a chance and I knew we did. We had a good game plan to come in and be physical. No one had been physical with these guys, and we were. We are a young football team and are still learning how to finish.”

Senior David Lopez rushed for over 100 yards for the second consecutive game, recording 110 yards on 30 carries. He added four catches for 37 yards.

Highland (4-0) won the 6A championship game last year. They took a 13-0 lead in the first half and led 13-3 at the half, but the Bronco defense posted a shutout in the second half to give the team a chance for a comeback.

“Our defense played fantastic, and I was really proud of how they stepped up and stopped the run,” said Jewell. “We have a lot of things to build on.”

Brophy got a pair of field goals from Connor Furey (42, 27) with the second coming with 6:27 left in the fourth quarter. After forcing a punt deep in the Highland side of the field, the Hawks took a safety to cut the lead to 13-8.
Brophy got possession after the free kick with 4:00 left, driving inside the five-yard line. The Broncos had four tries to win the game on the brink of the end zone with the final play from the one intercepted by the Hawks to seal the game.

Five players had at least five tackles and a tackle for loss. Junior Alex Salome led the team with seven solos and nine total tackles.

“We are going to keep building,” said senior Strider Aston.

The Broncos host Notre Dame Prep on Friday at 7 p.m.
