Swimming and Diving Wins Brophy-Xavier Invite, Earns 10 Automatic State Qualifiers 

The Brophy College Preparatory swimming and diving team won the 33rd Annual Brophy-Xavier Invitational and earned 10 automatic state championship qualifiers. 

“The biggest thing is each one of our boys went a best time or close to it,” said Head Coach Daren Brubaker. “It is contagious, and we just roll with it.”
 

Gabe Gonda and Finnegan Crawford tied for the win in the 200-yard freestyle in the first individual event of the meet, breaking the Reese Aquatic Center pool record with a time of 1:41.07. Both earned automatic state qualifiers. Senior Jake Herrera was fourth in 1:48.26 and Aiden Kelly was ninth overall (1:52.67). 

“Gabe and Finn are great friends, and it was really cool they got it together,” said Brubaker. “They are also friends with Jack Sorenson, who had the pool record. It all comes full circle.”
 

Theodore Neilson and Nicolas Wood were second and third in the 200-yard individual medley, touching in 2:00.00 and 2:00.65, respectively. Crawford won his second event of the day, taking the 100-yard butterfly in 50.57 with Oudman placing fourth in 54.39 and Mark Heffern in 54.86. Grady Gabarino was 16
th in 57.91. 

Seniors Gonda and Herrera earned state automatic qualifiers in the 500 free, finishing second (4:36.45) and fourth (4:46.68). Caden Oprandy won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.69 with teammate Neilson second in 59.22. Both were state automatic qualifiers.
 

Brophy won the 200 free relay with Caden Oprandy, Crawford, Oudman and Gonda with the second-fastest time in the state this season in 1:26.88. The 400 free relay (Heffern, Crawford, Herrera, Gonda) and 200 IM relay (Heffern, Neilson, Oudman, Oprandy) both placed second and earned automatic qualifiers.
 

“These guys worked really hard in the offseason, and they are starting to see it now,” said Brubaker.
 

Brubaker also highlighted transfers Nico and James Wood, who joined the school from Denver, Colo. Nico was third in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 Breaststroke, both provisional qualifiers.  

The Broncos had 20 individual swims overall that earned provisional qualifier status. 

“He finally had his meet, and I am happy for both of them,” said Brubaker. “They are meeting new people and our team has been welcoming.”
 

Brophy hosts Mountain View and Mesa on Thursday.
