Football Drops Opener at O’Connor

The Brophy College Preparatory football team dropped its season opener 24-10 at Sandra Day O’Connor on Friday.

Brophy (0-1) took a 10-0 lead in the first half lead over the Eagles but O’Connor flipped the script in the second half to pull away with the victory.

The Broncos got their first score of the game when junior quarterback Charlie McGinnis connected with senior Jude Almarez on an 11-yard scoring pass. McGinnis finished 24-for-31 for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his first start.

Junior kicker Connor Furey on a 39-yard field goal later in the second quarter for a 10-0 lead.

O’Connor capitalized on a special team’s mistake to create a short field and get on the board to cut the deficit to 10-7. With a change in momentum, they went on to score two more times and add a late field goal to record the victory.

Captain Strider Aston tied for the team lead on the defense with eight solo tackles and a team-best two tackles for loss, while junior Mardale Rowe combined for eight tackles (five solo) and 1.5 tackles for loss in his season debut. Junior Jack Sebald contributed seven tackles.

Juniors Devan Kennedy and Trey Markham each recorded sacks in the game with Kennedy forcing a fumble recovered by Markham. Senior Sam Williams added an interception.

Senior captain Layton Duncan recorded eight catches for 76 yards, while David Lopez had 18 carries for 66 yards and seven receptions for 45 yards.
