Esports Program Ranked Tops in the Nation by USA TODAY

USA TODAY High School Sports recently ranked the Brophy College Preparatory Esports program tied for the top program in the nation based on overall data tallied by PlayVS for the period since 2019. The Broncos have captured 12 titles in different disciplines since the inception of the program in 2019, tying Shrewsbury Sr. High School in Massachusetts with 12 titles for the top spot.

“All Esports players dream of being on top of the leaderboards,” said Jaymz Wallen ‘21, who is one of the founding players and a current coach. “As a player, it feels great; as a coach, it feels even better knowing your hard work pays off. I am glad for all the players and the friends I have made.”

Ahead of the Fall 2022 high school esports rankings, USA TODAY High School Sports compiled the rankings to determine the best esports teams.

Brophy started the program under the direction of Shawna Khan three years ago and it has grown in every way. Beginning with a dedicated competition area before the start of tryouts, the Broncos have been winning since the beginning.

“It has been growing tremendously over the years and people are more accepting,” said Wallen. “We have had one of the best teams and won championships. It is starting to be seen as a normal sport and participation will continue to grow.”

He says the team had nice computers during the first season but not equivalent chairs. It changed in year 2 and showed the continued support to have the best.

“The (Brophy) administration has been very positive towards the Esports program,” said Wallen. “We won the first two championships and they saw the potential in the program.”

During the most recent season, Brophy won a National Championship (Overwatch), two state championships (Rocket League), two state runner-up finishes (League of Legends), a PlayVS Pacific Youth Region title (Overwatch) and a runner-up finish (Overwatch) in 2021-22.

“One of the reasons we have done so well is the support from the administration from the president to the teachers on campus,” said Khan. “It is not what happens at every school.”

There will be an informational meeting for all interested students on Thursday, August 25 at 2:50 p.m. in the SAC. This year's games for the spring season will be #LeagueOfLegends, #RocketLeague, #overwatch2, and #VALORANT.
