Esports, sanctioned by the Arizona Interscholastic Association, has been added to the sports offerings at Brophy and other high schools around the state beginning with the 2019-20 school year. The AIA hosts two seasons of esports — one in the fall and one in the spring. The games selected by the AIA are Rocket League and League of Legends which run each season.
The season’s competition culminates in an AIA state championship tournament for each game. In 2019-20, Brophy fielded both a League of Legends and a Rocket League team with each team winning the 2020 inaugural AIA championship titles.
Brophy also participates in the High School Esports League. The HSEL runs regional and national tournaments throughout the year for various games. These tournaments culminate in championships offering college scholarship prize money for winning team members. Brophy fields Overwatch, Super Smash Bros. and Rocket League teams that compete in the HSEL tournaments.
In summer 2019, Brophy built an esports lab in the Innovation Commons. This state-of-the-art lab is home to all of Brophy’s esports teams and hosts open lab hours for all students.
