2025 Summit on Human Dignity

"What can I help with?"
Human Dignity in the Age of AI

Monday, February 24 through Thursday, March 6, 2025

SUMMIT MISSION STATEMENT
When we open up ChatGPT, it asks us a simple question: “What can I help with?” Rather than unreflectively requesting any number of tasks, our Summit instead wants to respond by taking ChatGPT’s question seriously. How can it and other forms of AI really help us? Are we using it in ways that do help us, or in ways that risk diminishing ourselves and others? And what is this technology actually capable of doing, positively and negatively, now and in the future? Perhaps ChatGPT’s “How can I help you?” is not as simple a question as we thought.

This is why we have titled our Summit: “What can I help with?”: Human Dignity in the Age of AI. We find ourselves in a time of rapid technological progress that is remaking the fabric of our society, culture, economy, education, and more, and challenging longstanding ideas about what it means to be human and to live in community with one another. It is a theme of history that our technological innovations outpace our capacity and commitment to reflect on their full effects. With the breakneck speed at which artificial intelligence is developing, it is more important than ever that we dedicate ourselves to a sincere reflection on the hopes we are investing in AI and other emergent technologies, along with the anxieties they raise. Indeed, our faith calls us to do so, as Pope Francis and the Vatican have been consistent in pointing out.

Through a series of keynotes, workshops, prayer services and activities, the Brophy community will be exploring these complex and thought-provoking issues as we wrestle with the blessings and challenges brought about by our own human nature and the tools we create. We look forward to becoming men and women better able to live for and with others thanks to this opportunity to discern how we can center our engagement with AI through a commitment first and foremost to the dignity of human beings and communities.

  • > What is the Summit on Human Dignity?

We are so fortunate every spring to engage in the Brophy Summit on Human Dignity, an event far more likely to exist on a college campus than at a high school. The range of topics we have examined in the past seventeen years is impressive – the death penalty, immigration, war, globalization, the environment, food, income inequality, masculinity, race, restorative justice, violence, democracy, the commodification of the human person, health, water, racism, disinformation, and debt – all through the lens of human dignity.

It takes months of planning and many hands to create this event. We invite you to approach it with an open heart, a curious mind, and a desire to discern how God’s will for justice and the fullness of human life calls you to future action, and to critically examine the actions you already engage in on a daily basis. This year’s summit will address four important questions related to the premise of Artificial Intelligence and Emergent Technologies.
  • > Four Guiding Questions

    1. How do we adopt innovations in A.I. while not sacrificing human dignity and the fullness of what it means to be a human created in the image of God?

    2. In what ways can A.I. reinforce or challenge equity, bias, or justice in society?

    3. What ethical responsibilities do individuals, corporations, and governments have in ensuring that A.I. serves humanity rather than harms it?

    4. How can we, as students and future leaders, critically engage with A.I. and emergent technologies to promote human dignity and the common good?
