Get A Cross
By Paul Fisko and the Brophy Liturgical Arts Class ©2006

VERSE 1

There are about one thousand nine hundred fifty one miles between us
A line of separation
But since when did the rule of law break the law of love set down by Jesus
His righteous violation
Jesus said “If you want to follow, take up a cross so to wherever I go…
This isn’t a mere suggestion
Right now if we’re just learning that much of their burden is our way of life then…
We ought to question…
Have we created what we’ve hated? Want and Poverty
Right that wrong, change, take, as long as none of its from me

REFRAIN
We all need to walk the desert
We all need to work on who we are
We all need to get a cross…

VERSE 2

There are about 12 million illegal immigrants in our population
With notable contribution
You know some people favor all this cheap labor encouraging immigration
Because it’s profitable to abuse them
Jesus said if you want to be righteous, turn on the light with us, then you might just
Bring about God’s glory
Right now if we’re not realizing that people are dying just to be like us
Listen to their stories…
Always workin’, families broken, just to make ends meet
Have and have-nots are still at odds, power versus need

REFRAIN
So, we all need to walk the desert
We all need to work on who we are
We all need to get a cross…

For together, we are better…when we can see others have been through
Jesus requires, this desire to walk the path in someone else’s shoes

VERSE 3

There are about two hundred ninety nine million nine hundred thousand human beings
Living within our borders
If we live in fear, don’t take a stand, close our minds, don’t do what faith demands, believe me we are the poorer
Jesus said if you want to make changes, welcome the stranger, look at their faces…treat them as your own
Right now we can make a difference, lessen the distance, make our existence…truly like a home.
Who is welcome? Can we help them longing to be free?
Not from hate but dire straits, some caused by you and me

REFRAIN
See, we all need to walk the desert
We all need to work on who we are
We all need to get a cross…
