Summit on Human Dignity

- Introduction

Introduction by Daniel Wilson, ’10:

Welcome to the 2010 Summit on Human Dignity!

Since the Sumer and Indus Valley Civilization established trade links in the third millennium B.C., cultures have engaged in an exchange of culture and economics. Over the past 5,000 years, this exchange has given way to wars, genocide, and disease, but has also enabled the spread of religion, agriculture, and advancements in science. Society has given a name to this seemingly unstoppable advance: globalization.

Inevitably, the 21st century has given way to entirely new forms of globalization. The rapid proliferation of technology, along with highly intertwined societies and economic systems, has enabled Iranian protestors to cry for help via Twitter and given western nations a heightened awareness of events in places formerly unknown. Unfortunately, the benefits of globalization are often misused, and they may well be changing the very fiber of humanity.

In light of this, Brophy has once again responded to our gospel call to examine the world around us. Every year, the Brophy community comes together to consider an issue of both global and local importance. As we face one of the worst recessions in one hundred years, the 2010 Summit on Human Dignity “Room at the Table: Globalization, Economic Justice, and Human Dignity” is designed to challenge Brophy students, faculty, and the greater community to consider how globalization is at work not just on a global scale, but in their lives as well.

The Student Planning Team has been working since the beginning of last semester to help make the Summit increasingly accessible to the student body. In addition to the school-wide speakers, this year’s Summit will once again include the workshop day, lunchtime speakers, and field trips. The Planning Team has designed contests, campus exhibits and programs so that the student body has numerous chances to actively participate in the Summit process. This website contains a wealth of information on the multifaceted opportunities of the Summit.
