Day 1- March 10th- Opening Mass Presider

The goal of the opening Mass is to acknowledge the complexities of war while at the same time facing our responsibility to dialogue, learn about and discern its’ impact on individuals and communities.

Day 2- March 11th- Historical/Political Context

Manuel JF Hernandez  is a retired Lieutenant Colonel, attended West Point and now teaches at a Immaculata High School.  He would again help students to ask the important questions about the military and war and our involvement in it by sharing his own personal experience and the struggles he faced while trying to answer the questions himself.

Day 3- March 12th- Experiences of War

This day will be a rotation of four assemblies by grade level.  Each speaker will address the effect of war on individuals and communities either by sharing personal experience and stories or stories of those they work with.  A few of the presentations will be panel discussions. 

Day 3 - March 12th – Fourth and Final 2007-08 Installment of Rennaissance Series:
The Impact of Photography on War

On Wednesday, March 12, Mr. Mica Mulloy from Brophy’s Fine Arts Department will present a photography lecture in connection with the annual Summit on Human Dignity. Mr. Mulloy—in his second year at Brophy—teaches Digital Photography, Graphic Design and Journalism. Mr. Mulloy will offer a presentation on “Uncovering Truth: The impact of photography on war and deconstructing myths and misconceptions about one of the world’s most famous photographs.”
*All installments of the Rennaissance Series will take place in the Harper Great Hall on Brophy’s campus and begin at 7 p.m.  Presentations will run roughly an hour long, with conversations to follow.  Refreshments will be served courtesy of the Brophy Mothers’ Guild.

Day 4- March 13th - Experiences of War Continued

While there is not an all school assembly scheduled on this day, Rick D’Elia who served as a photo journalist in Uganda will offer a lunch time presentation about the work of photojournalists in relation to human dignity.  He will share a slideshow of his work in Uganda.  Additionally, during the first week of the Summit a photo exhibit of Rick D’Elia’s work will be on display.  Please contact the OFJ for the location and times.

Day 5- March 14th- Christian Response to War: The Just War Theory and Pacifism

George Lopez

This speaker will be the first to address the Christian response to war.  George Lopez will begin by reminding us that 2008 marks the 25th anniversary of the US Catholic Conference of Bishops’ Pastoral Letter, The Challenge of Peace.  There the bishops stated that “Peacemaking is not an optional commitment. It is a requirement of our faith. We are called to be peacemakers, not by some movement of the moment, but by our Lord Jesus.” They also noted that we are a Church of two Catholic traditions for responding to war:  Just War and Pacifism. Lopez will compare and contrast these positions in an interactive manner with the students and pose reflection questions for them to consider and to debate.

WEEK TWO: March 17th- 20th

Day 6- March 17th- The Potential for Peace

Monday will continue looking at a faith response to war as we begin to look at the potential for peace.  On this day we will hear voices from various faith traditions as well. 

Lunchtime Presentation-  Interfaith Perspectives on War and Peace

The Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths will be represented at a special lunchtime presentation. 

Day 7- March 18th- The Potential for Peace Continued

Tuesday will again look at the potential for peace, but by examining how peace-building can be advanced by working for faith-based reconciliation, and how any person of faith can contribute to that work.

Day 8- March 19th- Becoming Peace Makers

While there will not be an assembly during the school day in the evening Pax Christi will host a candlelight peace vigil with special guest Michael Baxter.  This not only allows for active participation of our students towards the Summits end and during Holy Week, but also falls on the 5th anniversary of the War in Iraq. 
Prior to the Candlelight Peace Vigil Mike Baxter will examine the interrelationship of theology, history, and ethics, with particular attention paid to the morality of war and Christian peacemaking in a presentation in the Great Hall starting at 7pm.  To RSVP please contact Tim Broyles at tbroyles@brophyprep.org or 602-264-5291 x. 6434.

Lunchtime Presentation-  Legislative Efforts for Peace
Terry Mansfield, Executive Director, Arizona Dept. of Peace Campaign

In addition to discussing the 216 year old history to create a US cabinet level Dept. of Peace this special lunchtime presentation will also cover:
1-the growing numbers of Student Peace Alliance chapters on high school and college campuses;
2-contacting our Congressional Representatives to urge them to sponsor the Dept. of Peace legislation in the House of Representatives (HR808);
3-proven methods and solutions that reduce violence in our communities.

Day 9- March 20th- Closing Service

Mike Baxter will be a guest speaker at the closing prayer service which will serve as a prayerful wrap-up to the events of the Summit.
