09-10 Brophy Crew
09-10 RESULTS
Head of the Charles-
For the first time ever, Brophy Crew has fielded a Men's Quad at the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston, MA. The men’s quadruple scull faced extreme conditions, even by Boston standards. As the crew of Briggs Hoyt, Ryan Hemelt, Chris Burghart and Carter Radcliffe came down the course they were pummeled by wet, heavy snow and enveloped in sharp, cold air. The event they raced in was an “Open” event, which pitted the boys against competitors with racing backgrounds that include World Championships and Olympiads. The crew pulled a respectable time of 20:09.52 considering all of the challenges that this course presents.
Head of the Hooch-
There were a ton of great results at this regatta. One highlight was the 6th Place finish of our Men’s 4X made up of Briggs Hoyt, Ryan Hemelt, Chris Burghart and Carter Radcliffe. Their time of 15:05 put them within thirty-five seconds of the winning time.

Coach:
Dr. Ryan Krch, NMD ~ 602-505-0057
Coach Ryan was initially a self taught rower and started in the sport in July 1993. After joining Rio Salado Rowing Club in 1997 he was primarily coached by Bulgarian Olympic champion Iskra Balchev. He was asked to join the club’s Board of Directors working primarily on the boathouse committee, regatta development, and fund raising. Coach Ryan became the regatta director and developed what eventually became the Hot Head Regatta and the Desert Sprints. He started coaching for Rio Salado Rowing Club in 2002. In that same year he launched RSRC’s first Junior Program. He has served as President of RSRC. In the fall of 2009, Coach Ryan was asked to join Tempe Junior Crew to work with the novice juniors. His novice quad took Bronze at the prestigious and very competitive Brentwood Regatta in 2010. This quad went on to be the first TJC quad to qualify for the finals at SW Regionals. In December of 2009 he completed his USRowing Level I Coach exams. Coach Ryan continues to train and compete. In 2003 he stroked the men’s eight to a bronze place finish in the age group event at the San Diego Crew Classic; the largest west coast regatta. Also in 2003 the crew he was in took gold in the Men’s four at SW Masters Regionals. He was the 2009 and 2010 USRowing SW Regional Gold Medalist for the men’s single in his age group. He coached his Rio Salado Rowing Club master’s crew also at the 2010 SW Regionals. They took home more medals than any previous regional competition they had competed in. This highly competitive region includes the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico. During the summer of 2010 he was asked to take the head coach position for Brophy College Preparatory Crew. Coach Ryan was a naturopathic physician in clinical practice for 10 years and brings a strong emphasis on injury prevention, sports nutrition, and sports psychology. He currently consults on health issues for businesses developing wellness interventions to reduce health insurance costs while increasing productivity and enhancing quality of life via the workplace.
