Everyone remembers packing into Sun Devil Stadium on that cold, December night in 2005 when Bryan Berens ’08 led his team 99 yards down the field in 6 minutes to beat an overpowering, undefeated Hamilton team.
Everyone remembers Matt Smith ‘06 diving in the air to catch then sophomore, Berens’ pass to win one of the most memorable games in Brophy athletics history.
Two years later the Broncos are state champs again beating an extremely talented Desert Vista team by a score of 34-21.
The Broncos were led by the gifted wideout Sean Lieb ‘08, as he shredded the DV secondary by scoring four touchdowns and racking up more than 100 yards receiving.
Three of them came from star Berens and the other came from Drew Maggi ’08 on a trick play on one of the first drives of the game. Maggi not only threw a touchdown pass, he also had a big interception and some big tackles.
For the second time in three years, the Broncos are champions. The ’07 team will be remembered for their resilience, consistency and most of all, their hard work.
Next year, hopefully the Broncos can keep the dynast y alive and win yet another state title.
See the February edition of The Roundup for full coverage on the game.
