About the Fashion Show Theme

"Be the Light" is the 2017 senior class motto. The motto is chosen by the class at their Freshman Retreat and has served as a theme throughout their Brophy years.

Paul Fisko, Assistant Principal for Campus Ministry, offered, "Jesus said, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor does anyone light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." With this teaching at the heart of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's Gospel, it is no wonder that the Brophy Class of 2017 chose its powerful truth as a motto. This class agrees that the great and real danger of our times is a relinquishing of ourselves over to, what St. Ignatius of Loyola called, "dark spirits". That is, the doing of evil, fear, and promotion of a negativity in the world that shuts out hope and community. These seniors, who have grown so much in their faith and commitment to doing justice, state and beseech all in our community to "Be the Light." And, whether in the darkness of desolation when sadness or anxiety has arisen or the light of consolation when peace and goodness has reigned, these young men have seen that God can be found. As a light on a lampstand, informed by a Jesuit education, the Class of 2017 is made up of men who shine for and with others, who choose not to ignore inequality, poverty or oppression, but instead expose them to the light of unconditional love in action. After all, what makes possible Ignatius' command to "Go and set the world on fire?" Someone who will be the light. AMDG"
