All three teams competed this past weekend in the Phoenix Regional Tournament and performed with incredible polish and skill. Brophy students started their Saturday at 7:45 AM, not leaving the Superior Court House until about 5 PM, making their final arguments about the innocence or guilt of a fictional Occupy Protester.
Some special shout-outs go to senior Nate Moreno (middle photo) and freshman Jacob Fretto (top photo)who both earned All-Region awards for their performances. Nate received a perfect 4 out of 4 judge nominations, a first in Arizona Mock Trial, and Jake also earned top peer performer awards in all four rounds that he competed in.
A special “WOW!” to the entire ‘First Year’ team (AKA “the White team”), who nearly made it into the finals in the FIRST OUTING EVER in Mock Trial finding themselves in Round 4 facing Xavier’s much more experienced senior team. Xavier won in the end, but the presiding judge revealed that it was a very close ballot… which bodes very well for next year! The White Team includes: Jacob Godbehere, Chase Manson, Arjun Syal, Edward Nolan, Michael McMillin and Matthew Bohannon.
BUT WAIT…THERE’S MORE!
Moderator/Coach Lauren Karp received word after the Regional that the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education invited Brophy’s Blue Team to compete at the State Tournament.
Traditionally, only the top four teams invited to finals are asked to continue on to State, but this year the Phoenix region was so competitive that they decided to take five teams instead making 5th Place Brophy Blue a State Championship contender. Accordingly to the law coaches and Coach Karp, this could be the first time that the field has opened up!
Then came the news that Blue Teamer Jacob Fretto earned another All-Region award on top of the others at Regionals. Brophy Blue includes: Charles Dominguez, Roan Enright, Matthew Uvas, Jack Fowler, Jacob Fretto and David Hall.
The third team Brophy Red includes: David Meyers, Nathaniel Moreno, Peter Bos, Mateusz Bendisz, Cole Ryan and Yash Patel.
