Brophy Track and Field meeting on Tuesday February 1st at break (9:50) in Mr. Kalkmans classroom (P 114) for all Brophy students who are participating in Track and Field this spring. The first track practice is on Monday February 7th at 3:00 at the Brophy Sports Complex Track. Students must have permission forms and current annual doctor physical information turned at least one school day before you begin practice (Friday Feb. 4th).
Brophy Track:
This Tuesday, January 11th, there will be a student/coach/administration meeting with a Nike representative at lunch in the Great Hall. All Brophy athletes and coaches are invited and encouraged to attend this meeting. Please attend if you can.

Olympic Champion Nick Hysong and American Record Holder Jeff Hartwig will be hosting a 4 day pole vault camp December 20 - 23, 2010.
The camp is centrally located in Phoenix AZ near the 51 and Shea Blvd. We will have two pole vault pits and a long jump pit, as well as several other training apparatuses.

New and returning track and field athletes!
Track and Field Winter Workouts - Running, strength training, and conditioning activities will begin tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 30th) after school (3:00 - 4:00). We we will meet at 3:00 on the Loyola practice field (between the gym and the Great Hall) for warm-up and then run over to the Brophy Sports Complex track area for a light running workout and an aerobic game activity. Our winter team conditioning group will meet again for a workout on Thursday this week, and Tuesday/Thursday next week. The workout destination after we meet at Loyola field will be different each day - so be on time to meet at 3:00.
Those who plan to compete in track this spring and who are not out for a winter sport are expected to attend (all events). The main purpose for these workouts are to get started on a general conditioning base on which we will build into specific track and field event training later. During final exam week and the 2 weeks of Christmas break, you will run/train on your own. In January we will start 7th hour track and short after school workouts daily utilizing the weight room and running. Track season practices start on Monday, February 7th.

Yes, as noted by Coach O'Neil, we are in this top position because of a few performances after the Arizona state championship meet where we were close to #1.
"While everyone's performances were outstanding, I want to make a special shout out to Harry for making a final push to get us into the meet. Harry competed in several meets after the State meet and it was his final two weeks of training that gave him a PR in both the 400m. and 110 hh that moved us past Mt. View. Nice job Harry!"
The other big event was Tommy Williams going to Arizona meet of champions and improving his 800m time 2 seconds faster to a new school record time of 1:54.4.
Great news - Brophy has been selected as one of the 12 high school boys track teams in the United States to compete on Friday July 2nd in Eugene Oregon for the National Championship. We finished as the number one team in the Southwest Region. The High School (1st time ever contested) National Championship (hosted and sponsored by Nike) will be scored like a decathlon with each school allowed one athlete per event - each performance at the meet will awarded points. The team that earns the most points that day is the National Champion. No relays. Our participants will be:

This group will travel on Thursday July 1st to Oregon and return on Sunday July 4th. They will get the opportunity to represent Brophy College Prep in an extremely hyped media event, be treated like kings for their entire stay, and compete to win the 2010 National Championship.

Each year we award certificates to all participants, and plaques to our team MVP, most improved, most inspirational, best field event, best sprinter, best distance runner... Coaches will talk briefly about these things and other items about this year and next. We plan to have it be a short program -around 45 minutes.
Wednesday night went very well for Brophy Track. State Champion Tommy Williams won the 1600m at 4:21.10 and he finished 6th in the 800m. Geoff Roxborough place 2nd in the discus throw at 149'. Brophy 4x100 relay earned 4th place medals at 42.87 (Alex Bishop, Devon Allen, Josh Dennard, Harry Danilevics). The rest will be Saturday night - many Brophy athletes advanced to the state finals at Mesa Community College (5pm - 10pm). Field events - Alex Bishop and Stephen Squatrito will pole vault, Josh Dennard and Alex Bishop will long jump, James Harper will high jump. Track events in this order: Brophy 4x800 relay (Williams, Sean Hanson, Will Firth, Brian Ripple), 110 H Hurdles Harry Danilevics, 100m Devon Allen, 300 Im Hurdles Harry Danilevics, 200m Devon Allen, 3200m run Matthew Xuereb, Will Firth, and Tommy Williams, Brophy 4x400 relay (Danilevics, Allen, Josh Dennard, Glenn Dennard).
Please read this and check out the lane assignments. Coaches At this time if you go to http://www.aia365.com/athletics/brackets.php you can see the lane assignments for Wednesday's 5A1 and 5A2 state meet. You can also see the performance lists for the 4A. The 5A2 4x100 is not listed. When we merged the two state meets it totally blended four events. We caught three of those; but this morning I just realized that the 4x100 (5A2) was blended as well. 1- Advancement: When there are two heats; the top two finishers and then the next fastest five will qualify for finals. When there are three or four heats, then the winner plus next six or five fastest will qualify for finals. 2- Throwing implements. This has been an issue for some 4A schools; especially the discus. When the 4A and 5A were combined; implements were provided. IF there is a special one that your athlete uses, that we don't have; then it can be weighed and measured and goes on the rack. Anyone can use it. We have about 15 different discus and shots that are used only for state and the Chandler Rotary meet. 3- NT, ND, NH are outside qualifiers for the 5A. They are seeded into the outside lanes, first flights or first heat. When you see a mark that is slower than an athlete of yours; remember they were probably a region champion. 4- Distance runs. We will run one heat in the 1600 and 3200. We did split the 800 if the numbers were greater than 18. 5- Team camps. Reminder that all team camps are to be on the east side of the stadium. There will be port-a-johns on that side of the field. Warm ups are to be done on the field directly to the south of the track. Please remind your athletes that unfortunately NOT everyone is honest. Keep ALL valuables secured and with a teammate. Do NOT leave anything of value unattended. Every year I see team camps totally empty with textbooks (no one wants them) ipods, shoes, etc. A dishonest person will walk by, and swoop up a back pack,walk away with it rifle through it taking all valuables, and then dump the back pack somewhere else. Wednesday, the coaches meeting is at 2:00, but our 1st Brophy event is the 110m HH at 3:15, followed by the 100m around 3:30 and then the 1600m around 4:15 for 5Aboys... Our only field event is Discus - after the 5A D2 boys are done - so around 4:00 for Geoff R. Harry D. and Devon A are the only two who may need to leave school a few minutes early. If any student/athlete needs a ride on Wednesday from school - talk to your coach today. Saturday, everyone goes to the state meet on your own in time to be prepared for your event(s). Even though many field events start at 1:00, we (Brophy) do not have anything going on until after the running events begin at 3:00. Our field events Saturday (High Jump, Pole Vault and Long Jump) will all likely start after 4:00pm. State track meet team members - we will meet at 3:10 in the north meeting room at the track today (Monday). The Brophy track team had a good week last week and scored 107 points at the Fiesta Region meet for a 3rd place team finish behind top track teams from Chandler HS and Desert Vista HS. We move on to the State meet this week with the best Brophy track team ever - we have top athletes who likely will score in 13 of the 17 events. State events will be on Wednesday and Saturday at Mesa Community College. See the attached list to see who is competing in this year's 5AD1 state track meet.

Brophy/Xavier track team: All track team members are invited to join the track coaches tomorrow night (Friday) right after the region meet 4x400 relay at Vito's Pizza (1947 N. Lindsay Rd, Mesa) - just up the road from Mesa Mt View HS. Come watch the races Friday night and join us for pizza (at around 10pm). Your parents are encouraged to join us as well. Athletes food will be paid for by school. We are in the Fiesta Region. These are not lane assignments yet - just time schedule and RULES! When 15-year-old Devon Allen is online watching Youtube videos, he's not looking for footage of funny animals or wacky kids. "I'll type in 200-meter, 100, see what'll pop up, and see Usain Bolt or Tyson Gay. I watch them and see how they run the race," Allen said. The freshman at Brophy College Preparatory ran what was then the fastest 200-meters in the state this season in April, finishing in 21.86 seconds at the Queen Creek Invitational. When he's watching his heroes online, he's not just watching for fun. "Like with Tyson Gay, his start's not the greatest, but he wins races because of his speed," Allen said. "I'm watching the phases of the race." Devon's father, Louis Allen, said that a big part of his son's success has come from the fact that he is constantly wanting to learn. "I enjoy listening to him and his volunteering feedback. Everyone of those dads in the past says 'You need to do this, you need to do that' but now my son volunteers feedback and gives feedback to me," Louis said. Louis said that for Devon, the off-the-track training doesn't stop at the computer. "He will stand in the middle of the living room floor in the starting position like he is on the track and just mimic his start," Louis said. Louis said that one of the biggest lessons he's learned from Devon's success on the track has been about the roles parents should play in their children's athletics. "I think that's because it's important for a parent to understand that a parent needs to know they can only help their kids so far," Louis said. "In order for him to attain a level that he can and wants to, I knew that I needed to reach out to someone else who could continue to push him." Devon's coach, Bill Kalkman, said that Devon's natural ability certainly contributes to his success, but that the key to Devon's fantastic season has been because of his constant communication with coaches and his nature to ask why it is he's training the way he is. "One of his strengths is that he listens intently to your instruction and he's very responsive to teaching and coaching," Kalkman said. "Not only does he take what you say and try and put it into practice, but as far as the why, I think it's just a good way to treat people." Kalkman said that it's this sort of communication that's so important not just to the individual athletes, but to the team as a whole. "We try to talk to our athletes about what we're doing and why we're doing it," Kalkman said. "It gives the athlete a little bit of confidence in the coaching, but it gives them confidence to apply what their doing in the race. If its not connected, if we're not explaining why we're doing what we do, its hard to apply it to the actual race" Devon said that while one of the hardest parts of his training this season were the distance workouts employed to build his stamina, its been because the endurance work he did at the beginning of the year that's pushed him to where he's at today. "I had the speed, I knew I had speed, but going over distance would help me improve," Devon said. "I feel stronger. I think a lot of the training the whole year has helped me get better." As a freshman, Devon said one of the primary challenges he faced was proving his skill to some of the more seasoned athletes. "When we were training the whole year, I would always try to stay at the front of the pack, to let them know that I was working hard and trying to compete," Devon said. Louis said that Devon's success this year is a pleasant surprise, but not unexpected after of Devon's hard work. "He's always worked really hard at (running), and he understands that to be successful he knows how much hard work has got to go into it," Louis said. "We don't have to ask Devon to do the extra work to get better; Devon will do the extra work on his own to get better." |

The Arizona Multi-Events will be conducting the 35th Annual Arizona STATE Decathlon - Heptathlon on Thursday - Friday, May 20 - 21 at Queen Creek HS. Attached you will find the Meet Information and Meet Entry Application.
For the GIRL athletes, who have multi talents to compete in a Decathlon, Arizona Multi-Events will include the Girls Decathlon on the meet on May 20 - 21, along with the Boys Decathlon and Girls Heptathlon. Arizona would be the 3rd state in the nation, who stages a Decathlon for the high school Girls. The other states are Vermont and Washington.
The Girls Decathlon will be included as one of the events in the 2010 SW Classic Multi-Events to be conducted on Thursday - Friday, June 3 - 4. See the attachment of the flyer for
this event.

We will have a varsity team meeting at 3:00 on Monday 4/26 at the track (in a meeting room). Sprinter practice is on for tomorrow (Tuesday) and Thursday during 7th hour and after school.
Wednesday is the home meet - see the information below.
Friday is a varsity meet at Queen Creek HS - starting at 10am - so top 3 athletes per event will travel and may miss some school. See www.arizonatrack.com under schedule/results to see the meet info. For Sprinters/jumpers/hurdlers/throwers who do not travel will do a weight room workout right after school on Friday.
1st track and field event for the new Brophy Sports Complex:
All track event winners will set the HS stadium record and this is our only home meet this season. Many people will come out to see the new facility... should be a great meet.
It is a normal dual HS track meet - starting at 3:30, scoring varsity. If we can identify non-varsity easily from the 'wingfoot' seeding, we can score the JV meet as well.
Facility
- Teams camp outside the track on the east side.
- No food or drink on the Field Turf infield or track.
Track and Field Events
- Ron Smith will announce this meet.
- Electronic timing will be used.
- Each team is limited to 16 athletes per event, except the 800, 1600 and 3200 which are unlimited.
- Lane races - 1st heat freshmen?, heats 2 and 3 non-varsity, 4th and final heat is varsity (4 athletes from each school). ***Now with Wingfoot - athletes will just race in the lanes they are assigned through seeding.
800 meter will be 3 heats - freshmen, non-varsity, then varsity.
- 4x800 relay and 3200m - race boys and girls combined.
- Pole vault will be varsity boys first starting at 11'?, followed by all other levels starting at 6'. Pole vault coaches will determine whatever is best for the meet....
- 2 long jump runways - boys and girls LJ 3:30-5:00, boys and girls TJ 5:15-6:30. 4 jumps, no finals.
- HJ girls first, followed by boys.
1. The discus will be thrown at new Brophy track along with all of the other events.
2. We will start varsity boys Pole Vault at 3:15, all other field events start at 3:30.
3. The heats/lanes will be set by 'wingfoot', so athletes will race in lanes assigned regardless of age group (varsity, jv, frosh) or # of participants per school.
4. New track spike limitation - 1/4 inch spikes or shorter.
Sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and THROWERS.
We will start practice today at the new track at 3:00. We will meet on the FieldTurf field and briefly discuss the new facility and a few guidelines for keeping the track and field in top condition.
A partial list of rules would include;
-No gum, food, sunflower seeds, Gatorade, soda... on the track or infield at any time. These items, if spilled, will damage the track and/or carpet over time.
-Track spike length on the track is ΒΌ inch or less. Longer spikes will tear the track surface and runways in ways that lead to a faster breakdown of the track.
-Football cleats/soccer/lacrosse...must cross over the covered sections of the track.
