BEST: Lost Parkas & Navy Blue Jacket

|

Please check the parka you have at home to see if it belongs to someone else. One parka that is missing is brand new with no name and no patch. The other that is missing is brand new with a patch and says Cal Higgins on the tag. The navy blue jacket is a small Victoria Secret brand. Thank you for your help in locating these.

Meanest Mom on the planet

According to the Associated Press, Jane Hambleton, after finding alcohol in her son's car, decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone -- by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Jane has fielded more than 70 congratulatory telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, and school counselors.

"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're really overboard, lady."'

Chances are, her son will never drink and drive again. So, what do your children think about underage drinking? Get a great gameplan together no matter what their age: clic

In order to host the Age Group and Senior State meets in a few weeks, we have to install the bulkhead. This process takes a lot of man/woman power and about 3 hours of time. We would like to invite those interested in helping us to be there on Saturday, March 1st at 10:30 a.m. We will need people to get into the pool as well as others to lift the heavy pieces from the deck to the water. You will be able to earn 100 points toward your BEST Family Participation Hours for the year. We will also be providing pizza and drinks. Thank you in advance for your help on this.

BEST: Parent Meeting - Wednesday, Feb. 20th 5:30 p.m.

|

On Wednesday, Feb. 20th at 5:30 p.m. we will be holding a parent meeting in the study hall room at the Brophy Sports Campus. Among the topics to be discussed will be the summer practice schedule, the summer meet schedule and the upcoming Age Group and Senior State meets that will be hosted by BEST. In addition, there will be an ASU student, Shari Jedinak, RN, BSN, who is doing a study on risk factors identified by the American Heart Association, as being associated with sudden cardiac death in young athletes. This topic is not meant to alarm anyone, it is meant to provide information and help a student complete her study. These are her words explaining her study:
"Recent literature has suggested that increasing screening and identification of risk factors in young adult athletes decreases incidence of sudden cardiac death. This in-service (which will be conducted on Wed. Feb. 20th) will last about 20 minutes. There will be a pre-test before the in-service and a post-test evaluation following a power point presentation. Each of these will take about 5 minutes to complete. The purpose of this in-service is to provide parents with the knowledge and eduction on the twelve risk factors associated with sudden cardiac death in young athletes. This study is being done in accordance with my master's degree program at Arizona State University, and your participation is completely voluntary. Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to meeting you."
If you have any questions regarding this study you may contact Dave Gibson 602-264-5291 ext.6458 Sandy Lee 602-264-5291 ext.6457or Shari Jedinak480-262-6962. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

BEST: Family Participation Policy

|

Download file
Attached is the Family Participation Policy put in place to promote full participation by BEST families as we assist our athletes and coaches to build a great swim club. The policy is consistent with the mission of BEST:
"...to provide opportunity and encouragement for each of its swimmers to fully develop his or her potential in competitive swimming. The value of this mission is derived from the gradual acquisition of life enhanding attributes such as integrity, commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship which are fundamental to the pursuit of personal excellence and the precess of striving to "Be the Best That You Can Be."
For most BEST families, the policy is simply a mechanism to document the volunteer service we have traditionally provided. In addition, the policy will make it easier for new families to join the BEST tradition of volunteer service. The policy outlines the following:
Families with one or more swimmers on the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Blue, Red or White groups have a participation goal of 300 points per family accrued from Sept. 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.
Families with swimmers in the Rising Stars and Starfish groups have a participation goal of 150 points per family accrued from September 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.
Families can meet their participation goals through volunteer service at BEST swim meets, activities, and events, as well as high school swim meets held at the Brophy Sports Campus.
Half service points can be obtained by volunteering at BEST away swim meets.
Volunteer service activities include: swim officiating and administration, BEST facility support (snack bar, team shop, etc.), BEST team support (team parent, chaperone, etc.) and other activities as noted in the polilcy.
Sign up for volunteer service in the Brophy Sports Campus office.
The intent is to achieve full participation by BEST families. Accommodations will be made for those families that have circumstances preventing them from reaching the full service goal.
This policy is posted on the BEST website and is available in the office. For those who have provided volunteer service since September 1st, please document those hours in the office so that it can be credited toward your sercie goal. A sign up book is available in the office to make it easier to document your volunteer hours.
If you have any questions regarding the Family Participation Policy please contact the office.

There will be many opportunities to volunteer as BEST hosts the upcoming Age Group and Senior State Championships here on March 13th - 16th. There will be a sign up sheet in the office for a multitude of jobs, most which require no experience, but a willingness to help. We appreciate any help that you can give us. It takes many people to host a meet of this size. We are expecting over 800 swimmers in attendance. Thank you in advance for your help.
