BEST: Lost Parkas & Navy Blue Jacket

|

Please check the parka you have at home to see if it belongs to someone else. One parka that is missing is brand new with no name and no patch. The other that is missing is brand new with a patch and says Cal Higgins on the tag. The navy blue jacket is a small Victoria Secret brand. Thank you for your help in locating these.

Meanest Mom on the planet

According to the Associated Press, Jane Hambleton, after finding alcohol in her son's car, decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone -- by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Jane has fielded more than 70 congratulatory telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, and school counselors.

"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're really overboard, lady."'

Chances are, her son will never drink and drive again. So, what do your children think about underage drinking? Get a great gameplan together no matter what their age: clic

In order to host the Age Group and Senior State meets in a few weeks, we have to install the bulkhead. This process takes a lot of man/woman power and about 3 hours of time. We would like to invite those interested in helping us to be there on Saturday, March 1st at 10:30 a.m. We will need people to get into the pool as well as others to lift the heavy pieces from the deck to the water. You will be able to earn 100 points toward your BEST Family Participation Hours for the year. We will also be providing pizza and drinks. Thank you in advance for your help on this.

Masters: Rankin Family

On Thursday, Feb. 21st Maureen Rankin's father passed away. Mo was able to fly to Oregon in time to say good bye. On Monday, Feb. 25th there will be a funeral. If anyone would like to make a donation to the Rankin family to help them defray the cost of traveling to the funeral, I am sure it would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help on this.

Starfish & Rising Stars-Wednesday Update-February 20, 2008

|

Good Evening!
Hope everyone is having a good week. Following are several FYI's for everyone.

Schedule Reminder=
Coach Mo will not be at practice for the remainder of this week.
Remember Saturday's practice (February 23rd) is 11:30-12:30p.m.

Regional Meet Entries. We have 13 Rising Star Swimmers who have qualified to swim in the Regional Swim Meet next weekend. Please look for the meet information and entries in your mailboxes. The entries will also be posted on the bulletin board tomorrow.

Parent/Coach Conferences. We started the Starfish and Rising Star Parent/Coach conferences yesterday-Tuesday. We have completed 14 of them already! They are going great! One last reminder, if you have not signed up for one and want to, please check the sign up sheets in the team office. They are located on my desk. They have been great!!

BEST Parents Meeting.Tonight we had fa presentation by a ASU Graduate Student. I heard the presentation was very good! Unfortunately, by the time I was getting ready to present on Nutrition, most of the parents needed to leave with their swimmers. I elected to postpone my talk until next Wednesday, February 27th. I will begin PROMPTLY at 5:30p.m. We will conclude by 6:30p.m. (It is my son's 16th birthday, so I need to leave when I am done) I sure hope you will plan on attending. And I do apologize to those parents who so graciously attended tonight expecting to hear me speak on Nutrition. I just want as many people to hear this info as possible.

BEST Summer 2008 Practice Schedule. The summer practice schedule is now available. Please make sure you get your copy. HOWEVER, there is a mistake on the Starfish schedule. All Starfish will have practice with the Rising Stars on Monday mornings too. So, the Starfish schedule is Mon/Tues/Thus/Sat.

BEST Summer 2008 Long Course Meet Schedule. Also, available is the TENTATIVE summer meet schedule. Please note this is subject to change.

Have a good week! Thank you for your continued support! -Coach Jennifer

Red Team-Week of February 20th Info

|

Hello!
Hope everyone is having a great week. For those of you who were at Lost Dutchman all weekend, hopefully you are recovering! It was long, but very good in so many ways.
Following are several misc. items and reminders that are important now and in the coming two weeks:
Schedule & Changes.Tonight before practice I told the Red Swimmers of the following schedule for the next three (3) days:
*Thursday, Feb. 21st=6-7:45p.m. Team Mtg & Swimming. (Blue will be with us)
*Friday, Feb. 22nd=5:30-7:30p.m. Swim (Blue will be with us)
*Saturday, Feb. 23rd=9-9:45a..m.=Dryland & Swim=10-11:30a.m. (Blue will swim with us @ 10:00a.m.)
*Sunday, Feb. 24th=Optional workout=12Noon-2:00p.m.

Regional Meet Entries.Tomorrow, I will be handing out both the meet information and the swimmers entries for the Regional Swim Meet. The meet dates are Thursday, Feb. 28th(500/1000/1650)-Sunday, Mar. 2nd. I will discuss the entries with the swimmers on Thursday and enter my final version on Friday.

Parent/Coach Conferences.A HUGE Thank You goes out to the 19 Of 30 Red Swimmers who Parents had conferences with me last week!!! I have three more scheduled for next week to conduct yet. Great insight was gained by me the coach about the athletes! I feel that so much is gained for everyone by doing these. Next week I will be typing up summaries of those conferences and mailing those out to each family. Again, thank you for your support! (FYI-For those families who have other age group swimmers...White will be having these conferences in March and Blue in April.)

Parents Meeting Rescheduled...Plan on Attending!!Tonight we had a BEST Parents Meeting. We had a guest speaker from ASU. She did a talk on Sudden Death in Young Athletes. This was her Master Degree Project. I heard that it was very good and quite informative. Due to the time line/length of her talk, I made the decision to reschedule the Nutrition Talk for NEXT WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27th. We will begin PROMPTLY at 5:30p.m.!! I feel this is a VERY important talk for parents to hear. I have several great handouts and I have a visual display with samples of the section on Post-Workout Recovery needs. I hope to see you there! We will conclude BY 6:30p.m. (It is my son's 16th birthday, so I need to leave at the conclusion of the meeting!)
*A big thanks to those parents who were in attendance tonight!

Summer 2008 Summer Practice ScheduleThe BEST Summer Practice Schedule is now available!! Please make sure to get your copy. After checking the Red schedule carefully, it is correct as posted. Please note that the time for dryland has not been figured in to the swim times. The dryland times will be 9-9:30a.m. on Tue/Thu/Sat.

Summer 2008 Long Course Meet Schedule. The tentative meet schedule is also available for everyone! PLEASE remember that this is tentative!! At this point, we do not have a travel meet on the schedule. The coaching staff have not yet decided if we are going to do one.

*FYI-Now that both schedules are out...as a coach, I would much rather have families take an extended break during the month of August. If you plan on swimming in the championship meets in July, you need to be consistent during the months of May, June and July. the season is short and any long breaks within the season stand a good chance of effecting your season goals.

Have a great week and weekend! Thank you for all of your continued support! -Coach Jennifer

Hi all! Here are some notes for this week….

1) Lost Dutchman Recap
• Great job by our 5 boys at the meet this past weekend. They contributed so many points to our team score. Our age group boys (14 and under) came out in 1st place! If you combine those points with the girls point…we won the meet by 200+ points!!!! Now we need to build off of this momentum and carry it into States in one month. Our goal should be to come out on top their as well!
• Swimmers of the Meet go to our 4 boys who swam over 15 events each during the course of the weekend! Congratulations to Cameron Heidenreich, Kyle McCoy, Connor Roman and Ethan Wojciechowski!
• Congratulations to Ethan on finishing 4th in the 10 & under high point award.

Silver - Some Notes (February 19th)

|

Hi all! Here are some notes for this week….

1) Lost Dutchman Meet Recap
• I was pleased with the swims over this past weekend. I think most swimmers are where they need to be right now. Some factors that are influencing times are…sickness, missing practices, extremely tired from the workload in practice and how much the swimmers put into the practices they are at. We have one month until States. I will begin to separate the group into swimmers that need more rest and those that don’t. My goal is to have all the swimmers experience a fast end of season meet.
• Our age group swimmers (14 and under) won the meet! Congratulations. The boys were 1st and the girls were 5th. The scores combined gave us a 200+ point victory. We need to carry this momentum into the State Meet and make sure we come out on top.
• Congratulations to our two high point award winners…Chris Webb (tied for first) and Celina Li (won all seven events).
• New Yard Sectional Time standards were achieved by Chris Webb (200 Fly and 500 Free) and Celina Li (200 Breast).
• New Yard Far Western Time Standards were achieved by Sally Wang (200 Back) and Chris Webb (200 Back).

2) Practice Schedule for the rest of this week…
• Tuesday 3:30 – 5:30
• Wednesday 5:30 – 7:00am and 3:30 – 6:00 (dryland 5:15 – 6:00)
• Thursday 3:30 – 4:00 Run and 4:00 – 6:00 Swim
• Friday 5:30 – 7:00am and 3:30 – 5:30
• Saturday 7:15 – 8:00 dryland and 8:00 – 10:00 swim
• I did tell all the swimmers that were at Lost Dutchman that they could take off either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning….but not both.

3) This is the last big push until the end of short course season. Swimmers need to be making all practices to get the most out of their season.

That is all for right now.
Thanks!
Coach Kevin

BEST: Parent Meeting - Wednesday, Feb. 20th 5:30 p.m.

|

On Wednesday, Feb. 20th at 5:30 p.m. we will be holding a parent meeting in the study hall room at the Brophy Sports Campus. Among the topics to be discussed will be the summer practice schedule, the summer meet schedule and the upcoming Age Group and Senior State meets that will be hosted by BEST. In addition, there will be an ASU student, Shari Jedinak, RN, BSN, who is doing a study on risk factors identified by the American Heart Association, as being associated with sudden cardiac death in young athletes. This topic is not meant to alarm anyone, it is meant to provide information and help a student complete her study. These are her words explaining her study:
"Recent literature has suggested that increasing screening and identification of risk factors in young adult athletes decreases incidence of sudden cardiac death. This in-service (which will be conducted on Wed. Feb. 20th) will last about 20 minutes. There will be a pre-test before the in-service and a post-test evaluation following a power point presentation. Each of these will take about 5 minutes to complete. The purpose of this in-service is to provide parents with the knowledge and eduction on the twelve risk factors associated with sudden cardiac death in young athletes. This study is being done in accordance with my master's degree program at Arizona State University, and your participation is completely voluntary. Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to meeting you."
If you have any questions regarding this study you may contact Dave Gibson 602-264-5291 ext.6458 Sandy Lee 602-264-5291 ext.6457or Shari Jedinak480-262-6962. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

Just A Head's Up

|

As we approach the final weeks of this Short-Course season, I want to emphasize the importance of staying healthy. The swimmers' bodies are starting to rest and repair from all the hard, long yards they have put into their systems. Please make every effort to stay hydrated, well nurished, and establish consistent sleep patterns.

In preparation for and to ensure a little extra rest heading into Lost Dutchman, practices on Wednesday and Thursday of this week will be shorter: Wednesday, Feb. 13 = 4-5:30 pm / Thursday, Feb. 14 = 4:30-5:30 pm.

Reminder: there is a Parent's Meeting on Feb. 20 starting at 5:30 pm. Nutrition will be the topic of discussion.

Far Westerns: those that have made cuts for Far Westerns should have received a letter in their mailboxes. Please respond by Wed., Feb. 20.

White - Some Notes (February 11th)

|

Hi all! Here are some notes for this week…

1) Lost Dutchman Meet is this weekend. I put updated entry sheets in the file folders today along with a meet information sheet. I think I only made a couple of changes. The updated sheets will be dated 2/11/2008.
2) Practice changes for this week due to the meet-
• Friday- 5:00 – 6:00pm
• Saturday – 10:00 – 11:00am
• Monday 2/18 – 5:00 – 6:00pm
3) Far Western Info sheets were put in the file folders for the following 3 swimmers: Kyle M, Connor R and Ethan W. Please return those to me ASAP if you plan on going or not. We are trying to get an idea if we will have enough swimmers to go.
4) Later this week or early next week I will have the end of season plan for the swimmers. This will let them know what meets they are qualified for and should plan on attending.

Silver - Smoe Notes (February 11th)

|

Hi all! Here are some notes for this week…

1) Lost Dutchman Meet is this weekend. I put updated meet entries and a meet information sheet in the file folders today. I made some changes due to swimmers being sick. Please check the updated events. The sheet will be dated 2/11/2008.
2) There is morning practice this week on Wednesday only…no Friday. Friday practice for those not swimming in Lost Dutchman will be 3:30-4:30pm.
3) There is no practice on Saturday or Monday due to the meet.
4) Information sheets will be passed out today about Far Westerns in April. If people are interested in attending, we need the sheets back ASAP. If anyone in Silver is planning on attending Far westerns, you will not be allowed to take a Spring Break prior to the meet. We will have off Easter Weekend, but that is it. It makes no sense to take a week off for vacation and then try to swim at your highest level. Anyone taking a break prior to the meet (except Easter Weekend) will be pulled from the meet.
5) I will begin talking to the swimmers about end of season meets this week to see what we are gearing for.

That is all for right now.
Thanks!
Coach Kevin

Red Team-Week of February 6th Info

|

Hello Everyone! Hope your week is going good. Just have a few reminders this week for everyone.

Schedule Update.Everyone should have received the February monthly schedule. I e-mailed it to everyone and a paper copy was put in mailboxes. We do have several changes next week due to the Lost Dutchman Swim Meet. Please make sure to follow the monthly schedule!

Swim Meets. Now that we are reaching the "championship phase" of the season, we don't have many meets left, but the ones that we do have are big ones!
*Friday, Feb. 15-Monday, Feb. 18th=Lost Dutchman Swim Meet. The entries have been posted on the bulletin board and everyone in the meet should have received a copy of both the meet information and their entries. This meet has long days, that is with prelims and finals. We need to plan our time wisely. I will keep those entered up-to-date as the meet approaches next week.
*Thursday, Feb. 28-Sunday, Mar. 2nd=Arizona Age Group Regional Meet. The entries for this meet are due on Feb. 22nd. I will be working on these in a week or so. I will go over the entries with every swimmer before finalizing what they swim. This will be a big meet for several members of the Red group. This will be the last opportunity to make State Q Times. You have to have Regional times to swim in this meet!
*Thursday, March 13-Sunday, Mar. 16th=Arizona State Meet. this meet will once again be held here at our pool! Must have Q times to participate in this meet.
*Friday, march 28-Sunday, mar. 30th=Season Finale. EVERYONE is eligible to swim in the meet. This will be the last meet of the season, UNLESS you have Far Western Times and decide to participate in this as a travel meet. (We only have four swimmers who are eligible for Far Westerns, so most every one's last meet will be Season Finale) I hope everyone will plan on attending!

Parent/Coach Conferences. The informational flyers for this went out yesterday-Tuesday. I am also e-mailing it to everyone tonight-Wednesday, Feb. 6th. The sign-up sheets are located on my desk. I have had four parents sign-up so far. These are 15-20' conferences to learn more about your child's swimming and the coaches perspective on it. Please remember, ANY of the scheduled conferences times may be conducted OVER THE PHONE as a phone conference if this works better for you. I hope this will help more parents to take part in this opportunity! These conferences are slated to begin next Monday morning. I will either call you at the designated time, or we will meet here at the pool.

Goal-Setting Session.Last night after doing dryland, we had a goal-setting session of about 75'. The Red group did AWESOME!! Awesome listening; focus and we really got a lot done. EVERYONE had written (and thought out) at least six goals for six events. Many did more. I will use some of this info in the conferences.

New Time Standard Sheets.Arizona Swimming did something that I don't agree with, but it is done and we all need to make sure we are on the boat with this change...they updated/changes many of the qualifying standards for both Regionals and State in December. (Personally, I would never do this in the middle of a season!!) Last night we used a copy of new time standards that they all took home with them. Well, today, we discovered that there are several different time standard sheets circulating and with several discrepancies. Please note the following mistakes on the sheet that I handed out last night:
*10 & Unders are all correct.
*11-12's=Girls-2 Regional cut times are listed incorrectly. 100 Fly Regional time should=1:24.79 and the 200 Regional time should=3:05.39.
*11-12's=Boys-4 Regional cut times are listed incorrectly-50 Back should=44.49; 50 Breast should=50.49; 50 fly should=38.29 and the 400 IM should=7:45.49.
*13-14's=Girls-50 Breast State Time should=37.59.
*13-14's=Boys-4 Regional cuts and 1 State time are wrong. 50 Back Regional time should=40.09; 50 Breast should=46.09; 100 Breast should =1:32.39 and 50 Fly should=37.09. The State time for the 50 Breast should=38.39.
Sorry for the confusion. We will get the sheets corrected.

End-of-Season Red Group Celebration. As usual, I feel it is very important to celebrate the end of a successful season with the group! This group has grown so much!! As part of the exercises last night, I asked the swimmers for input into ideas of what they would like to do for a end-of-the-season party. The most popular answer was food and playing laser tag. I am looking at Friday, March 7th as my first choice. Saturday, march 8th as my back-up date. If there is a Mom or two who would like to help plan a fun meal and laser tag, I would love help in planning this. We WILL have fun...guaranteed!

Have a great weekend! -Coach Jennifer

Parent/Coach Conferences Information. The informational flyers were placed in everyone's mailbox yesterday-Tuesday, Feb. 5th. Hopefully, if you were at practice, you picked those up. This flyer explains all about the upcoming opportunity for parents to set up a brief conference with the coach to gain more insight into their own swimmer's swimming and progress.
*The actual sign up sheets will be posted tomorrow-Thursday, February 7th for parents to begin signing up for a conference time. *
Please remember, if you would rather do it by phone, please indicate so and leave your number for me to call you at the designated time.
*The time line for conducting these conferences begin the week of February 18th.

End-of-Season Group Celebration. In last week's blog, I indicated many upcoming dates for you. One that I had listed was for our end-of-season- celebration party for the two groups. I listed it incorrectly! The party date that I am looking at is SATURDAY, MARCH 8th. I have an idea already. If any Moms would like to help with this, I would love to hear from them! I really want the opportunity to celebrate a great season and provide some social time for the group to be together away from the pool! Stay tuned.

Enjoy your weekend! -Coach Jennifer

BEST: Family Participation Policy

|

Download file
Attached is the Family Participation Policy put in place to promote full participation by BEST families as we assist our athletes and coaches to build a great swim club. The policy is consistent with the mission of BEST:
"...to provide opportunity and encouragement for each of its swimmers to fully develop his or her potential in competitive swimming. The value of this mission is derived from the gradual acquisition of life enhanding attributes such as integrity, commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship which are fundamental to the pursuit of personal excellence and the precess of striving to "Be the Best That You Can Be."
For most BEST families, the policy is simply a mechanism to document the volunteer service we have traditionally provided. In addition, the policy will make it easier for new families to join the BEST tradition of volunteer service. The policy outlines the following:
Families with one or more swimmers on the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Blue, Red or White groups have a participation goal of 300 points per family accrued from Sept. 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.
Families with swimmers in the Rising Stars and Starfish groups have a participation goal of 150 points per family accrued from September 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.
Families can meet their participation goals through volunteer service at BEST swim meets, activities, and events, as well as high school swim meets held at the Brophy Sports Campus.
Half service points can be obtained by volunteering at BEST away swim meets.
Volunteer service activities include: swim officiating and administration, BEST facility support (snack bar, team shop, etc.), BEST team support (team parent, chaperone, etc.) and other activities as noted in the polilcy.
Sign up for volunteer service in the Brophy Sports Campus office.
The intent is to achieve full participation by BEST families. Accommodations will be made for those families that have circumstances preventing them from reaching the full service goal.
This policy is posted on the BEST website and is available in the office. For those who have provided volunteer service since September 1st, please document those hours in the office so that it can be credited toward your sercie goal. A sign up book is available in the office to make it easier to document your volunteer hours.
If you have any questions regarding the Family Participation Policy please contact the office.

There will be many opportunities to volunteer as BEST hosts the upcoming Age Group and Senior State Championships here on March 13th - 16th. There will be a sign up sheet in the office for a multitude of jobs, most which require no experience, but a willingness to help. We appreciate any help that you can give us. It takes many people to host a meet of this size. We are expecting over 800 swimmers in attendance. Thank you in advance for your help.

BEST: Entry Report for Lost Dutchman Feb. 15th-18th

White - Practice Schedule Update

|

Attached is an updated practice schedule for next week. I changed the following due to the Lost Dutchman Meet:

1) Friday 2/15 – Practice is 5:00 – 6:00
2) Saturday 2/16 – Practice is 10:00 – 11:00
3) Monday 2/18 – Practice is 5:00 – 6:00

Practice Updates

|

Due to the Lost Dutchman Meet, practices will be as follows:
Friday, Feb. 15 = 6-7 pm
Saturday, Feb. 16 & Monday, Feb. 18 = No Practice

Also, please recognize that we are at a turning point in our season. Sets are becoming more individualized based on paces, heart rates, and rest time. Occasionally, practice may end early if we have completed the necessary yardage and skills are up to par. Further, due to the individualization, swimmers may find they are doing different sets, send-offs, and yardages than other swimmers in the same group. Swimmers: please do your best to compare yourself to yourself only... Parents: please avoid the pitfalls of comparing your son/daughter to another swimmer.

White - Some Notes (February 4th)

|

Hi all! Here are some notes for this week…

1) Attached is the practice schedule for this week and next. I will put these in the file folders tomorrow. Please remember that Friday practice will be from 5:30 – 7:00.

2) Lost Dutchman is next weekend. There will be no practice on Saturday 2/15 and Monday 2/17 due to the meet.

3) We have two swimmers that expressed interest in swimming on the meet this Saturday from the White Group (Audrey and Kevan Mann). Coach Jennifer will have swimmers going as well.

4) Later this week I will send out a listing of who is qualified for what end of season meet so you can start planning.

5) Please talk to your swimmers about not sliding around in the wet grass and puddles….especially when it is cold out. I feel sorry for you parents that have to wash their clothes when they come home. We do not need anymore sick kids.

That is all for right now.

Thanks!
Coach Kevin

Silver - Some Notes (February 4th)

|

Hi all! Here are some notes for this week…

1) Attached is the practice schedule for this week and next. I will also put these in the file folders tomorrow.

2) Thank you to Mary Carbajal for filling in for me on the hike! Also, thank you to the Herriot family for having the brunch at their place!

3) Lost Dutchman Meet is next weekend. Hopefully we will have decent weather for that meet!

4) I will start talking to the swimmers about end of season meets. My goal is to make Senior and Age Group State Champs a big deal this year for the Silver group. I will take all the swimmers up to Manresa for a weekend if they all go at least one best time ever at the State Meet in March. This should help motivate and really create a team atmosphere at the meet. More end of season info will be out soon…including a Silver end of season dinner.

That is all for right now.

Thanks!

Kevin
