Take a look at what Brophy students have been doing this semester:

Student Shorts

    • 2012 Awards Assembly Photo Gallery
    • Brophy students Flavio Bravo ’12 and Kapil Kanagal ’13 were awarded the Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the City of Phoenix. Bravo was honored for his extensive community service projects which included volunteer work for Life Care Rehabilitation Center at South Mountain, the Si Se Puede Learning Center and the Boys and Girls Club of the East Valley. Flavio is on the Brophy swim team, president of the Brophy Honor Choir and on Student Council. Kanagal was honored for his more than 700 hours of volunteer service and his latest mission to educate the public in the Valley about health risks associated with Bisphenol A, or BPA, a compound used in the manufacturing of plastics. His efforts have led to the banning of BPA-based containers on select Frontier Airlines flights and at Brophy.
    • Tim Cooney ’14 competed in the Arizona Junior Championship at Snow Bowl and took 1st place for his age class in both the slalom and the giant slalom.
    • National Honor Society had 72 successful donations at the Spring Blood Drive, enough to save up to 216 lives!
    • Honor Chorale and Honor Choir participated in the “State Choral Fesitval’ at Mesquite High School. These groups qualified for this event as a result of their performance rating at the fall festival last September. Honor Chorale received a 1 (Superior) and Honor Choir received a 2 (Excellent.)
    • Justin Dombrowski ’13 and Stephen Fuller ’14 were named to the National Sporting Clays Association All-State Team.
    • Brophy Speech and Debate emerges victorious! After a brutal competition, not only did the Broncos win the Arizona District National Qualifier Tournament (beating rival Desert Vista) but the team qualified 12 students to Nationals this summer in Indianapolis on June 10th. This is the LARGEST Brophy squad to take Nationals. Qualifiers include: Policy Debate – Andy McCoy ’12/Abhi Singh ’12 and Joe Skoog ’13/Sam Wolf ’13; Lincoln-Douglas Debate – (there are only three spots from the entire state we took all of them) Samir Reddy ’13, Jack Flynn ’13, Karan Chotalla ’13; Congressional Debate – Joe Russell ’14; Extemporaneous Speaking – Bill McDonald ’12, Carlos Ochoa ’14; Duo Interpretation (1st time in history Brophy has qualified this event to nationals) Jeremiah Johnson ’14. A special thanks to coaches for mentoring this year’s epic team: Beth Clarke, Megan McDonald, Chris Calderon, S.J., Caleb Alpaugh ’07 & Ryan Hubbell, Steven Ebensberger ’10, Peter Mardian ’09, Kevin Coltin ’09, Lexi Tippings, and Erica Tassone.

Clubs

    • Brophy’s Mock Trial team competed in the All-State Mock Trial tournament. This is the first time the team placed in a decade. Not only did the team make it to the finals taking 2nd place in State. Congratulations to Blake Tonn who won the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education “Top 3″ Award and Scholarship for best performance.
    • Eric Andrews ’13 was voted in as Lt. Governor for the North Mountain division of the Southwest District Key Club.
    • This past weekend, the Brophy League of Academic Contests competed in its first ever National History Bowl Competition in Washington, D.C. In addition to teams from all over the continental United States, History Bowl has also hosted teams from China, France and Guam. Ranked #25 (out of 186 teams) going in, we finished in the mid-30’s (in the 33-36 range). There were two parts to this competition: 1/The Bowl (team competition) and 2/The Bee (individual competition). Before the start, Brophy College Preparatory was listed in the official program as one of the 8 “Teams-To-Watch” who could pull off an upset. Varsity competitors included: seniors Wesley Fullmer ’12 and Connor Wareing ’12; juniors Jordan Bruner ’13, Nehal Samra ’13, Kapil Kanagal ’13, Andrew Burke ’13 and Pratap Jayaram ’13; Rajet Vatsa ’14, Sahej Samra ’15.
    • Brophy’s Knowledge Masters team participated in the international academic competition, Knowledge Masters Open Tournament.  Once again Broncos paced FIRST in Arizona, almost doubling the score of the second place team.  Overall the team placed 22nd among 518 high schools, scoring 1558 points (403 points above the mean.)  Congratulations to this outstanding academic team:  seniors Shane D’sa, Wesley Fullmer, Conner Wareing, Bill McDonald and Ashish Sridhar; juniors Nehal Samra, Michael Sanchez and Kapil Kanagal; sophomores Raj Vasta and Seth Harris.  A special thank you to Dorothy Dunnion and Susan Maynard for mentoring this group of young lads.
