LATIN I PROFICIENCY TEST STUDY GUIDE

Incoming freshmen who wish to be considered for Latin II or Honors Latin are invited to take the Latin placement test, which is similar to our Latin I final exam. Although we use Ecce Romani I (Longmans), any first year textbook would adequately prepare a student for this exam.

Language and Grammar

  • Nouns: declensions 1-3: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative, vocative; common case uses
  • Verbs: all tenses of indicative, active (conjugations 1-4); all present imperatives, infinitive
  • Adjectives: 1st, 2nd, 3rd declension; agreement of nouns and adjectives
  • Pronouns: ego, tu, nos, vos

Translation and/or comprehension of Latin sentences or a short paragraph

Culture and Civilization

  • Geography: important locations in Italy; Roman provinces
  • Mythology: Olympian gods and goddesses; famous heroes
  • Roman Life: city of Rome; clothing; family

Latin in Use

  • Basic oral phrases: greeting; leave-taking; questions
  • Derivatives: English words from Latin roots and prefixes
