The study of the classical and modern languages has long been a part of Jesuit
secondary education. With so much emphasis currently being placed on global understanding
and cooperation, foreign language study is even more as relevant than ever.
Latin and Spanish (French, if prior experience, is limited to 20 students
per year and taken at Xavier College Preparatory) are available to the Brophy
student.
8th grade students who are currently studying Spanish can take a placement
test in May to see whether they qualify for the next level.
Students who have no foreign language experience may elect a course in language
skills. This class meets Brophy’s first year language requirement.
Language Skills
Full Year
Students who have no foreign language experience may elect this course in language
skills. This class meets Brophy’s first year language requirement. This
is a course in Pre-Language skills and counts as a Brophy Foreign Language
credit. It is for students that need to develop additional vocabulary and grammar
skills to successfully transition to a foreign language.
310: Latin I Full Year
This course introduces the student to the grammar and vocabulary of classical
Latin. In learning Latin roots and prefixes, the student will discover how
extensively Latin has influenced the English language. The class will also
explore our cultural indebtedness to the Greeks and Romans, especially in
the areas of literature, architecture, and mythology.
311: Honors Latin I
By Recommendation-Full Year
Students may request to be placed in the Honors Latin I section. The goals
of this course are the same as Latin I, but the pace is accelerated, allowing
more time for the study of culture.
320: Latin II
Full Year
This course completes the study of grammar and introduces students to reading
selections from Roman authors such as Julius Caesar. A student who has studied
Latin in junior high and can demonstrate a basic knowledge of Latin I may take
this course in the freshman year.
321: Honors Latin II
By Recommendation-Full Year
Students who have excelled in the study of Latin I may take this course. The
accelerated pace of this class allows time for reading selections from other
Roman authors in addition to Caesar.
330: Latin III
Full Year
This class places emphasis on reading a wide variety of authors such as Caesar
and Cicero. The study of English derivatives from Latin will help prepare students
for the college entrance examinations.

341: Honors Latin IV
342: AP Latin IV
Recommendation-Full Year
The advanced Latin classes generally follow the Advanced Placement syllabus,
which features Virgil's Aeneid and other Roman authors.
410: Spanish I
Full Year
First-year Spanish guides the student in developing proficiency in the areas
of speaking, listening, reading and writing. A wide variety of materials are
used (textbooks, handouts, magazines, newspapers, audio and video tapes) offers
students the opportunity to grow in cultural awareness to insure not only grammatical
competency, but also an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures.
420: Spanish II
Full Year
After reviewing the basics of Spanish I, this course continues the study of
Spanish grammar and vocabulary. By the end of this course students will be
able to express themselves in all tenses, be able to read material of greater
complexity, and have a deep awareness of the customs of other cultures.
421: Honors Spanish II
By Recommendation-Full Year
Prerequisite: Proficiency Exam
The honors course is similar to Spanish II; however, the pace is faster. Students
are introduced earlier to the subjunctive mood and will be expected to speak
Spanish to a greater extent and show comprehension of more complex material.
In addition to a solid A in Spanish I and the recommendation of the teacher,
students must take a qualifying test to enroll in this class.
430: Spanish III
Full Year
This course continues the development of the student's verbal and oral skills.
Grammar and vocabulary are reviewed, using texts, workbooks and classroom conversation.
At this level much of the class will be conducted in Spanish
431: Honors Spanish III
By Recommendation-Full Year
Prerequisite: Proficiency Exam
Designed for those who excelled in Honors Spanish II, this class uses college-level
texts that offer challenging conversation and reading selections.
444: Honors Spanish IV
By Recommendation-Full Year
Prerequisite: Student must pass the proficiency exam that is offered during
second semester, and have a strong recommendation from their Spanish III
teacher.
The course includes a review of Spanish grammar within a content driven curriculum.
The emphasis in on developing oral fluency while focusing on culture. The
course investigates the twenty Spanish-speaking countries of the world, and
the United States. Students also develop written skills. To be considered
for Honors Spanish IV, a student must take the proficiency exam that is offered
during the second semester, and have a strong recommendation from their Spanish
III teacher.
443: AP Spanish IV
By Recommendation-Full Year
Prerequisite: Student must pass the proficiency exam that is offered during
second semester, and have a strong recommendation from their Spanish III teacher.
This class is an elective that follows the goals of the Advanced Placement
syllabus: advanced-level listening, speaking, reading and writing. After completing
this course, students will be expected to understand formal and informal Spanish.
