The Brophy Counseling Department is divided into 2 areas: Guidance Counseling and College Counseling. This structure allows the department to effectively work with students and their families throughout their time at Brophy.
There are 4 full-time Guidance Counselors who work with freshmen, sophomores, and 1st semester juniors. Freshmen will learn who their counselor is once school begins in August. A student will keep the same Guidance Counselor for 2 1/2 years until he he transitions to his College Counselor in 2nd semester of his junior year.
The Guidance Counselors at Brophy provide a variety of services that include Naviance orientation, schedule planning, the administration of the PSAT (pre-SAT) to juniors in the fall and the PLAN (pre-ACT) to sophomores in the fall. Our Guidance Counselors are also available to meet with students regarding personal, academic, and emotional issues. Families are also welcome and encouraged to schedules meetings with their student's Guidance Counselor at any point in time to discuss any concerns or questions that arise.
There are 3 counselors doing the college counseling
and administration of college services at Brophy Prep. They work with students
and their parents during the college selection and application process.
The college counselors welcome phone calls and emails from parents and are happy to schedule individual meetings with parents and their sons.
Students begin working with their college counselor 2nd semester junior year.
In the course of each junior's 2nd semester, he will meet with his college counselor to organize his senior schedule, to develop a college plan, and to devise a standardized test timeline. Each January, the college counselors host a mandatory Junior Parent Meeting to introduce parents and students to the college process. In the fall semester, the college counselors meet with seniors to assist them with developing their college lists and provide feedback about college application essays. Each counselor hopes to instill in each student the empowerment to make the college process a manageable experience. The college counselors' doors are always open and they encourage their counselees to be proactive about scheduling appointments.
Through the fall semester college admissions representatives from a variety of schools will visit Brophy. Seniors may sign up to attend 5 visits while juniors may attend 3 visits. Brophy Prep and Xavier also host an annual college fair with more than 130 representatives from colleges around the country. Many colleges or groups of colleges hold area wide receptions either at Brophy or at hotels or other facilities all over the Phoenix area. Students are encouraged to visit the Counseling Department on the 2nd floor of Romely Hall to find out about additional college visits and programs going on in the Phoenix area.
