Destiny is the catalog for the Information Commons’ collection. It is accessible through a link on the Information Commons Resources in Blackboard. Both print and electronic books can be searched by
title, author or keyword. The collection is organized by the Dewey
Decimal system, with biographies (BIO), fictional works (FIC), and reference
materials (REF) shelved independently.
The Information Commons strives to offer the research and reference
materials to support the Brophy curriculum and the required reading books for
students. The collection currently includes 20,000 volumes and a small video
collection. Books are loaned for two weeks, reference books and magazines can
be borrowed for 24 hours with a Brophy ID card.
The Information Commons provides periodicals to keep up with current events
and also sports and special interests. The periodicals are
kept for a year and the local newspaper is held for one month.
A copy machine is available in the Information Commons, and the charge
to copy is ten cents per page.
The Commons is equipped with 60 Pentium IV computers that are networked to
Brophy's on-campus resources as well as the Internet. The computers run Microsoft's
Windows XP operating system, and have Microsoft Office 2007 as
well as numerous programs specific to the various academic disciplines. Teachers
may reserve the computer area for a class, but should notify us several days
ahead. It is recommended that students use e-mail to send files back and
forth from home and school. By sending a message with the file attached,
the student will be able to access it from anywhere e-mail is available.
There are three black-and-white, networked laser printers. A software
program keeps track of each student’s printing jobs. Each year a
student is given 100 pages in his account. After he has depleted
his account, he will need to replenish his account with Mrs. Oleksak or Mrs.
Hanson. The student must add at least $1.00 to the account, and the cost for
printing is .05 per page.
Two rooms with large tables and chairs are available for group study.
Priority is given to groups that are working on a class project.
